Very informative. Give it a whirl (even if you have to give the Old Gray Lady a hit). It's worth it.

Guess this means they won’t be bugging me to fill mine out any more.

Good riddance.

One obvious problem is that this website counts Hispanic as a separate race and the Census Bureau does not.

You sure about that? With such a large Hispanic population in this country, I find it hard to believe that our pc-infected government wouldn't list them as a separate ethnic group.

http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/race/racefactcb.html
“People of Hispanic origin may be of any race and should answer the question on race by marking one or more race categories shown on the questionnaire, including White, Black or African American, American Indian or Alaska Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, and Some Other Race. Hispanics are asked to indicate their origin in the question on Hispanic origin, not in the question on race, because in the federal statistical system ethnic origin is considered to be a separate concept from race.”

Hovering down the west coast in CA there is a stampede of whites out of the counties (and presumably out of the state!) and Hispanics in.

Hovering around central FL there is a huge increase in Hispanics mid-state on the “I-4 corridor”...and I don't think they are GOP Cubans!

It is amazing how the rural counties (the tan ones) are being hollowed out.

Thanks for posting the instruction to Hispanics from the Census Bureau. I guess since I’m not Hispanic, I paid it no mind when I got my form.

So your original question is a valid one. Where did the NY Times get the data about Hispanics?

Out of the old wazoo?

You bet, but the source of the data on Hispanics is in question. Apparently, the Census Bureau doesn't list any such ethnic group. See upthread.

I saw that, but the data on Hispanics is in question. Check out iowamark's post #8.

Well, we can all see with our own two eyes that Hispanics are growing in number, but the question remains - how did the NY Times come up with these figures, when the US Census Bureau doesn't have a category for "Hispanic", and requests that anyone who falls into that group checks another box?

The census treats the cultural Hispanic category separately from the biological race category and asks for information on both. On the 2010 census form (http://www.census.gov/schools/pdf/2010form_info.pdf) Hispanicness is question 8 and race is question 9 (questions 5&6 for people other than the primary one) :

NOTE: Please answer BOTH Question 8 about Hispanic origin and Question 9 about race. For this census, Hispanic origins are not races.

8. Is Person 1 of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin?
_ No, not of Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin
_ Yes, Mexican, Mexican Am., Chicano
_ Yes, Puerto Rican
_ Yes, Cuban
_ Yes, another Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin — Print origin, for example, Argentinean, Colombian, Dominican, Nicaraguan, Salvadoran, Spaniard, and so on.
________________________

9. What is Person 1’s race? Mark one or more boxes.
_ White
_ Black, African Am., or Negro
_ American Indian or Alaska Native — Print name of enrolled or principal tribe. __________________
_ Asian Indian
_ Chinese
_ Filipino
_ Other Asian — Print race, for example, Hmong, Laotian, Thai, Pakistani, Cambodian, and so on. _____________________
_ Japanese
_ Korean
_ Vietnamese
_ Native Hawaiian
_ Guamanian or Chamorro
_ Samoan
_ Other Pacific Islander — Print race, for example, Fijian, Tongan, and so on. ___________________
_ Some other race — Print race. ______________

Thanks for taking the time to look that up, Karl. It removed a cloud off this conversation. Much appreciated.
