Staring at naked women makes you smarter: Study

Researchers at the University of Tampere and Aalto University showed volunteer men and women photos of models in varying stages of undress.

Before all you women in sensible shoes cry “sexist pig!”, I hasten to add the models also were male and female.

The volunteers’ electrical brain activity was monitored.

Results appear in the current edition of the science journal PLoS One.

They make me proud to work for this newspaper, to share space with such brain food as the SUNshine Girl.

Professor Jari Hietanen reports the less clothes the models wore, the quicker each volunteer’s grey matter kicked into action.

This may have roots in how our cave-man ancestor identified a potential mate. It was easier if they were naked.

“In less than 0.2 seconds, the brain processes pictures of nude bodies more efficiently than clothed bodies,” Professor Hietanen says.

“Responses were the strongest when the participants looked at (nudes), the second strongest to bodies in swimsuits, and the weakest to fully clothed bodies.”

And how smart do I become if I stare at naked women after having had 8 beers?

Unfortunately, the brain cells that became smarter were the ones you just killed.

Duh, never knew I had an ace up my sleeve all these years............

As Hunter Thompson was purported to have said: "Hey, it works for me!".

Manswers also cited a John Hopkins study that concluded a good way to deal with pain is to picture yourself in a threesome with 2 hotties. That’s science.

I recall a theory Cliff on “Cheers” put forward- that only the slowest, weakest brain cells were killed by the alcohol so that the remaining brain tissue was stronger and more vibrant.

Works for me!

How does the author comes into a conclusion that faster reaction on certain stimuli makes us smarter? Suppose we get to look at a series of pictures of male and female, some of them are family members or spouse. I'm not surprise if when those pictures with family members come up, the time for the brain cell to show electricity is faster than when those of unknown persons.

I'm not denying the correlation with the remnant of prehistoric brain on possible mating (Oohh.. does it mean we believe in evolution now?). I'm just taking issue with the 'makes-your-smarter' headline.

The volunteers’ electrical brain activity was monitored.

[...]Professor Jari Hietanen reports the less clothes the models wore, the quicker each volunteer’s grey matter kicked into action.

This may have roots in how our cave-man ancestor identified a potential mate. It was easier if they were naked.

Accurate experimental findings, faulty logic, and wrong conclusion (or at least: misleading article).

The electrical activity increased, but not in the higher brain centers (the prefrontal lobes). Cognitive powers were not enhanced. Rather, the activity in the limbic system (reptilian brain) - responsible for instinctive behavior (like evaluating the sexual attractiveness of potential mates - increased.

Looking at images of nude woman would NOT enhance the ability of a normal male subject to solve analytical problems (e.g., mathematical equations or logical deductions). Rather, certain instinctive processes would be triggered, helping him to determine whether the subject at hand was beddable, or worth bedding.

Regards,
