Are we going to let Obama get rid of Herman Cain the same way he got rid of Jack Ryan?

Posted on 11/30/2011 7:48:10 AM PST by E. Pluribus Unum

The smear campaign against Herman Cain is the exact same kind of smear campaign the media ran against Jack Ryan. Had Jack Ryan not been taken out, we would never have had a Senator Obama, and without a Senator Obama we would never have had a President Obama.

Campaign demise

Ryan married actress Jeri Ryan in 1991; together they have a son, Alex Ryan. They divorced in 1999 in California, and the records of the divorce were sealed at their mutual request. Five years later, when Ryan's Senate campaign began, the Chicago Tribune newspaper and WLS-TV, the local ABC affiliate, sought to have the records released. On March 3, 2004, several of Ryan's GOP primary opponents urged release of the records.[5] Both Ryan and his wife agreed to make their divorce records public, but not make the custody records public, claiming that the custody records could be harmful to their son if released. On March 16, 2004, Ryan won the GOP primary with 36 percent to 23 percent against Jim Oberweis who came in second.[6] Obama won the Democratic primary, with 53 percent to 23 percent against Dan Hynes, who came in second.

On March 29, 2004, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert Schnider ruled that several of the Ryans' divorce records should be opened to the public, and ruled that a court-appointed referee would later decide which custody files should remain sealed to protect the interests of Ryan's young child.[7] The following week, on April 2, 2004, Barack Obama formally established his position about the Ryans' soon-to-be-released divorce records, and called on Democrats not to inject them into the campaign.[8] The Ryan campaign characterized Obama's stance as hypocritical, because Obama's alleged backers had been emailing reports about the divorce records prior to Judge Schnider's decision.[8]

In May 2004, two polls were conducted statewide where the Chicago Tribune poll found Ryan trailing Obama 52% to 30% [9] while the Sun Times reported that he was trailing Obama 48 percent to 40 percent in the U.S. Senate race, according to a new Daily Southtown poll of 500 likely Illinois voters [10] [11] On June 22, 2004, after receiving a report from the referee, Judge Schnider released the files that were deemed consistent with the interests of Ryan's young child. In those files, Jeri Ryan alleged that Jack Ryan had asked her to perform sexual acts with him in public in sex clubs in New York, New Orleans, and Paris. Jeri Ryan described one as "a bizarre club with cages, whips and other apparatus hanging from the ceiling."[12][1]

The decision to release these files generated much controversy because it went against both parents' direct request, and because it reversed the earlier decision to seal the papers in the best interest of the child. Jim Oberweis, Ryan's defeated GOP opponent, commented that "these are allegations made in a divorce hearing, and we all know people tend to say things that aren't necessarily true in divorce proceedings when there is money involved and custody of children involved."[1]

Prior to release of the documents, Ryan claimed he had told leading Republicans that the divorce file could cause problems for his campaign.[13] After the documents were released, GOP Chair Judy Baar Topinka said of Ryan's comment "It may have been somewhat misleading."[14] Topinka said after the June 25 withdrawal that Ryan's "decision was a personal one" and that the state GOP had not pressured Ryan to drop out.[15][16] Ryan's campaign ended less than a week after the custody records were opened, and Ryan officially filed the documentation to withdraw on July 29, 2004. The same party leaders who called for Ryan's resignation chose Alan Keyes as Ryan's replacement in the race; Keyes lost to Obama, 27% to 70%.

We know the state-controlled media chooses our candidate. Are we going to let them do it again?

I am not voting for Cain in the primaries anyway, so no. Herman doesn't know enough about policy to be President. The damage from the various bimbo eruptions are a result of his own mishandling of them.

The latest one could have been put to rest easily had Herman simply come out and explained this 13 year friendship, why he was in regular contact with her, why was he helping her financially, and why his wife doesn't appear to have known about it. Instead he remains vague which leads many to believe where there is smoke, there is fire. It is not enough for his supporters to claims she is a low rent piece of trash. Yup, she appears to be exactly that - but this being the case, why on earth would Cain be giving her financial assistance? Cain just doesn't adequately explain any of this and because of that the story will never go away.

Or a sense of history. I mean, really, how many times to Republican candidates have to be “Borked” before the electorate catches on? I can’t decide which is worse, the unfounded allegations or the people who take the bait, hook, line and sinker, even to the point of making stuff up to support and justify their position. If they can do this to a man with Cain’s integrity without a shred of evidence imagine what it’s going to be like when Newt or Romney get the nomination! This is yet another sad, sad commentary on our citizenry.

“We know the state-controlled media chooses our candidate”

In 2008 the MSM(working with the Democrats) chose McCain as the Republican presidential candidate. It worked to help McCain and to undermine the other candidates. A small part of this is documented in the book Game Change.

It is clear the MSM and the Democrats want Huntsman as the Republican candidate in 2012. If it is not him, it appears they want Romney or Gingrich.

Whoever the candidate is, he will be attacked relentlessly by the MSM as soon as he gets the nomination.

The most important attribute a Republican candidate must have is the ability to bypass the liars in the MSM and deliver his message directly to the American people.

If a candidate can’t do that, nothing else matters.

Just because Obama is a socialist doesn’t mean Jack Ryan wasn’t a scumbag. Neither one should have been elected/electable.

As much as I despise Gingrich and Romney, I’ll still defend both against baseless personal attacks. As far as their records are concerned, they’re on their own.

Ryan is a sick puppy. His own actions ruined his marriage and hurt his child. His own actions ruined his chances at public office. His only argument is that someone uncovered his degenerate secret.

Don’t think this argument helps Cain in the least. It just reminds the public that Republicans can be degenerates as well.

After seeing what happened with Joe Miller and Lisa Murkowski, I'm not convinced it's just the press and the Dems.

A strong conservative leader elected to the highest office in the U.S. could and likely would forever destroy the Democrat Party’s stranglehold on the black vote. The Democrat Party would cease to have any political clout for generations to come. I’ll vote for Herman Cain for exactly that reason....

You have hit on the one reason why Cain must be stopped from becoming the GOP nominee...I suspect there are a number of Republicans that don't want the apple cart tipped over, either...

And I'm sure you've never done anything that you wouldn't want the whole world to know about, sitting on high from your seat of judgement as you are.

We may be headed towards a brokered convention. It’s certainly possible. I sure don’t see anything that will help Romney climb above the level he’s been at for months. 23% of 50% of the electorate isn’t going to win him the nomination. If the polls are true Gingrich will get the attacks soon and he’ll fall back to low single digits.

BINGO.

Plus this.

It boils down to a series of debates in the Fall of 2012 between Herman Cain and Barack Obama.

They simply CAN NOT LET THIS SITUATION occur. And he must be eliminated well in advance for their own comfort. They do not want him anywhere NEAR that nomination. Smear campaign, pure and simple. How people on "our side" could side with the smear machine, and the Government-Media Complex pushing it 24/7 has caused me to lose faith in many of my fellow Freepers. It has been an extremely sad period to see people hoodwinked this way and not see the enemy at work. Very sad. There are so many principled people on here. But so many others now I have my doubts about, they could be so easily flipped by the Smear Machine which is so good at this kind of negative narrative scandal production and amplification. It is sheer Joseph Goebbels pure and simple. The "Big Lie". They did it on Quayle. They did it on Palin. Cain's turn now. To fight them tooth and nail is most honorable. To buckle under or submit to them is, well, a disgrace in my book. Sorry that is how I see it.

I’ve thought all along the Cain attacks have the fingerprints of establishment Republicans all over them. Wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Romney or Gingrich were behind them, either. Somebody with deep pockets is involved.

Are we talking about the allegation that he took his wife to a club and wanted to have sex with her in front of lots of people? Somehow I think degenerate is a good description.

Welcome to a thread where not everyone is gloating over the Cain-Axelrod smear job. Stay a while. You might get a different perspective.

I could care less about Cain's personal life. It's not relevant if had a hundred affairs.

He's just too inexperienced. This is not the time for On the job training.
