Thanks chad. Here’s what I’m getting when I do that:

“Your input can’t be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL ‘dvd://D:\’. Check the log for details.”

So ... I’m at a loss. The drive plays just fine when it’s a CD.

Is the DVD scratched? The data is on the label side, not the clear side.

Did you try a second DVD?

If so and if that also failed to play, start Windows Explorer and see if you can get a directory listing for a DVD disk. The "Computer" or "My Computer" icon on your desktop should start Windows Explorer. Look at drive D and see if there are files listed.

[ ‘please insert a Disk into drive D’ ]

I use VLC on Windows(W2K) and Linux.. both work fine..
You might need to update system.. or DVD is flawed..

If your computer is that age it’s probably a CD player, not a DVD player. CD players will not play DVDs.

That was the whole reason for the thread rk. I was under the impression that the right software could ‘convert’ the DVD and play.

Are you saying that its not possible at all? (computer is xp os and about 6 years old)

Won’t play it. DVDs hold about 4.6 gig of information CDs about 600 meg. The tracks on the DVD are too small for the CD player to read.

Your computer must have a DVD drive. It cannot be done otherwise.

If the other DVD disk fails to play, and you cannot get a directory listing using Windows Explorer, you may need to replace the drive. Six year old DVD drives are not particularly reliable. New DVD burner drives are very cheap these days, under $30, and they are usually (but not always) fairly easy for you to replace yourself.

Check and see if you’ve got USB 2.0 ports. You can probably pick up a DVD external drive for twenty to forty bucks and it should work fine. You can check Amazon or NewEgg.

I was under the impression that the right software could ‘convert’ the DVD and play.

You have to have a DVD drive to play DVD films. If you have a six year old (2005) Dell, it probably has a DVD drive. To make sure, click Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > select the Hardware tab > Device Manager > look for DVD/CD-ROM drives and expand that to show the make and model number of the drive. Enter that info into a Google search and you will learn whether you have a DVD drive or a CD-ROM drive

If for whatever reason the drive will not play your DVDs, it would be safest to buy an external USB 2.0 DVD drive like this, after you check the user's manual to make sure that your computer has USB 2.0 ports. It probably does.

The alternative is to replace your internal drive with an internal DVD burner like this for an IDE drive or this for a SATA drive, but there is always some risk that such standard equipment will not fit or will not work in a Dell. You can distinguish IDE from SATA by the width of the cable going into the back of the drive: about 2" wide for IDE, about 1/3" wide for SATA. The other cable going into the back of the drive is the power cable.

You don't require a DVD burner (which can create new DVDs with your content) to play movies, but prices are so low these days that there is no reason not to buy one. Still, if you are certain that you will never want to burn a DVD disk, you might save a couple of dollars by buying a non-burner DVD drive, called a DVD-ROM drive.

The thing is too...when I’ve put in the DVD it never launches. You know how when you put in a CD in the drive and it just starts playing. It doesn’t do that with the DVD

The simplest way is install DVD Decoder Pack for Windows XP and then Windows Media Player will play your DVDs.

(Upgrade Media Player to v 11)

Does the drive look pretty much like this?

Is the model number really DDU1615 and not DOU1615? If yes to both it is a standard IDE (not SATA) drive.

Don't worry about the Windows auto-play, you will bypass that anyway when you use VLC to play your DVDs.

By the way, TChris’s suggestion in #55 is another way to do this, but I am still wondering if the drive is defective or not.

He seems too rational to be one of my relatives, but who knows?

Were you able to get a file list from your DVD in Windows Explorer? If you have a "Run" command option visible when you click Start, just type

explorer d:

into the box and hit enter.
