Photo taken 7:26AM AK Time, (about 5 minutes ago) of downtown Barrow, Alaska. It's -15F.
Picture updates every few minutes.
Sun will be up soon...oh, wait...
I bet the updates every few minutes are hard to really spot. Not a lot going on. Well, I guess you can always watch the sun come up ... oh, wait ... that isn’t going to happen either.
You guys are correct. I just researched it and the next time Barrow, AK residents will see the sun is on 1/24/2012 when it rises at 1:07PM, Barrow time.
Isn’t -15F this time of a year a heat wave??
I think it gets colder in January and February.
Looks like a webcam of the Star Wars planet Hoth. lol
Just curious - why would you park vehicles outside in this kind of cold? Doesn’t that make it very difficult to start and run them? Maybe engine block heaters? How does that work?
I can’t imagine why someone would choose to live full time in a place like that.
The vehicles are PLUGGED IN to power to keep the block warm....we forgot to do that once when it was about 20 below, I think....NOT a good thing.
It was 60 degrees when I got up, and I fired up the heat.
77 here in Key Largo Florida. Feelin fine.
Just checked. the record low for December is -55. February has the coldest day on record at -57.
2 hours and 57 minutes of visible light today, the sun does not rise.
30 days of night.
For a job. I talk with a woman there from time to time. You have to have a license to possess alcohol.
That would be ugly!
The average low in Barrow Alaska in mid December is about -27F.
Yes it's a heat wave.
Reminds me of a scene from “30 Days of Night.”
BRRRrrrrrr....I have experienced 40 below....you really do not go outside at that temperature....or at least MINIMALLY....
Sure...make me feel bad. It's 26 here in Rome, New York. Windchill is 17.
30 degrees and light snow in Jackson Mi.
That makes 40* seems downright heavenly!
76 here in Orlando. But tomorrow you will wake up to a low of 75 and I will wake up to a low of 60.
Damn, cold fronts!
Good, no sunrise for a few months. I can finally get some shuteye.
So is that the beach we’re looking at?
I guess it is the beach. Check out this time-lapse video.
I’m in Fairbanks, and I would never live there. That said, we have some things going on here in Alaska. Things like low humidity, low illegal aliens, no state taxes, tons of guns, and in the interior about the best summers u could imagine. Oh yeah, millions of acres of No One! Yep, life is rough!
I remember a story and video a couple of years ago about an ice shove coming ashore along Lake Huron. It was trashing some houses.
aftermath video here.
FABULOUS! That’s how December and Christmas is supposed to look! Anyone in Barrow want to trade apartments with me in warm, moldy Louisiana?
I had my sun quota in June.
If Barrow has a mall and the internet I could live there happily!
Wonder if there are any handsome blond,blue-eyed pilots there? My idea of ‘heat’!
A heating coil in water jacket of engine, battery blanket with heating coil plugged in all night. Unless you want to park till spring.
Winter is starting this time of year, tis the end of fall in that picture.
That's what I thought, too, at least for Barrow.
We usually have colder weather than -15 here in North Dakota this time of year (this year has been blessedly warm--so far!)
Bah humbug! The best Christmas I ever had was on a sailboat in Florida.
Just curious, I see that house(?) near the water
Does the Arctic Ocean have tides?
If it does I assume they are much smaller difference than the Atlantic / Pacific being that the moon is never directly above and would be pulling on a much lower angle
I’ve always wanted to visit Barrow, but the whole no alcohol thing keeps me away! Question: can you ever swim in the ocean there or is it too cold year round?
I presume Barrow has water and sewers. How in the world do they protect water lines?
Here is something I never knew:
In 1935 the famous humorist Will Rogers and pilot Wiley Post made an unplanned stop at Walakpa Bay 15 mi (24 km) south of Barrow while enroute to Barrow. As they took off again their plane stalled and plunged into a river, killing them both. There are now two memorials at the location, now called the Rogers-Post Site. There is another memorial located in Barrow, where the airport has been renamed the Wiley PostWill Rogers Memorial Airport.
I knew that the airport was named Will Rogers, but never knew why until now.
Come on in, the water’s fine!
Swimming in Barrow, Alaska
Shopping in Barrow.
Looks like prices are about triple what you would pay in the lower 48.
Tour of Barrow (winter driving)
I remember when Will Rogers and Wiley Post died in ‘35. It was a sad day in Oklahoma.
I was in -15 once in St Paul and once in Hartford. It feels actually life threatening. I can’t imagine -55
my favorite site webcam!
I’ve been working in Prudoe Bay when it was -46ºf with a 55 mph sustained wind. IIRC, wind chill was somewhere around -100...
When it has been -20º and -30º then goes to -10º it really does feel warmer.
Yes it is a heat wave...weird weather...I’m in central BC and it was just barely freezing this morning with light snow...warmed up later in morning to 33 and mixed rain and snow. I don’t like it!!
So, on that day, my brother-in-law will very likely be up before sunrise.
And only on that day.
I remember back in the 40’s (1940’s) my dad would put a blanket over the engine when it got really cold...(Michigan)
