Iphone 4 got tossed this weekend

Posted on 12/18/2011 4:22:25 PM PST by varmintman

Prior to 02 I'd gone for some time hoping I could die of old age without ever touching a cellphone but that clearly wasn't going to happen; I was getting into too much trouble from not being able to find pay phones which basically stopped existing around that time. I mean, superman never had to look more than 30 feet for a phone booth to change in, but he'd go crazy now.

And then, a bit less than a year ago, the company I work for insisted on me buying an Iphone and the main idea was having access to email on the road. I mean, I'd never wanted anything to do with Apple after the stunt they pulled shutting down the Atari 520ST in 85, but I ignored any misgivings I may have had and bought the thing....

The biggest problem has been the thing getting a mote of dust or lint or something in that little hole for headphones and believing it was working with headphones when it wasn't. That keeps the user from hearing the other guy unless he figures out what's going on and puts the phone on speaker. The problem can usualy be fixed by blowing PC cleaning air into the headphone hole but it can take an hour or more of doing that.

That is still preferable to taking the thing to the local Apple store for service. Their normal mode is to have you make an appointment to be seen in two or three or four days and that basically means going several days off the air.

Then there's the thing about batteries. If a battery dies on any other cell phone you buy a new battery for $20 or $30 and replace the dead one. The Iphone needs to be replaced if a battery dies and, that's right, you need to make an appointment for that and that can mean several days off the air.

I mean, who the hell would buy a car which had to be replaced whenever a battery died.....

But the kicker came yesterday morning when the thing (actually the second one after the first being replaced for a battery), not only pulled its ugly little thing of acting like it thought it was on imaginary headphones, but aside from me not hearing other people other than on speaker, nobody else could hear me.

The normal deal with ATT is to be eligible for phone upgrades every two years; in this case the situation wasn't going to go for another year or more and I simply paid the full price for a Samsung/Android phone and the best ATT could do was a trade-in program which gave me 200 for the Iphone so that the whole deal cost more like 400 than 600, but I view that as money well spent, the Samsung Galaxy appears to be a much nicer phone.

after the stunt they pulled shutting down the Atari 520ST in 85

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of this. What happened?
Long story, but you asked for it.....
Eight-bit microprocessors had been being used for a few years for traffic signal controllers and people realized that a very small general purpose computer could be made from them so that by 76 - 78 you saw Apple microcomputers made using Motorola chips and other microcomputers being made using Z80 and 8080 chips, but memory access and software were very limited, everybody knew they needed at least 16 bits.
1978... Intel came out with the first 16-bit microprocessor but the architecture was munged and segmented and the whole world of OEM microcomputer manufacturers, mostly some 300 small companies in Silicon Valley, took one look at the 8086 and the specs for the Motorola 68000 and told Intel "Thanks but no thanks, we'd rather wait the extra year and a half or whatever!", meaning that the 68000 was what they really wanted, 32-bit registers, 32-bit data paths and buses available, no nonsense, no BS, no segmented architecture.
If Intel had been a Japanese company that would have been it, i.e. that would have been more shame than they could have lived with, the president, vice president, board of directors and everybody else in senior management would have committed sepuku. The natural decision of the market place was to let Intel die.
And then, IBM stepped in with the PC and reversed the entire basic decision of the market. In fact the PC wasn't even a full 8086, it was a crippled toy with an 8088 chip i.e. 16-bit registers and 8-bit data paths. That is, they locked the world into an 8-bit world for several more years.
The one company which was in a position to challenge IBM by producing a real mass-market microcomputer with the 68000 chip was Apple; what they did was to produce two computers (Lisa and toaster Mac) which were so pathetic they convinced the whole world that the 68000 itself was a bad idea. Those computers were using the 68000 chip itself to generate graphics so that remnant compute power was less than a T80 running at two or three MH. They never were used for any meaningful work.
And then, in 1985, Atari came out with a personal computer which was what the PC should have been from day one. The 520 was a beautiful machine with an 8 MH 68000 chip, a half meg or meg of memory which was huge at the time, a real graphics card, good graphics, and the GEM GUI and applications.
Apple realized that it would be three or four years before they could have anything to compete with that. They threatened to tie all of Atari and DRI (GEM)'s products up in courts for years unless crippling changes were made to both the 520 and GEM and the upshot was Atari getting out of computers, presumably because they figured it was too ugly a business to be in and they'd rather sell toys.
This (Apple) is the company which claims to be the computer company for "the rest of us".......
Haha ...
That just happened to me. I have the iPhone 4. When doing the laundry this afternoon I mistakenly threw the iPhone in the washing machine. When I got it out it did not work! =:o)
Off to the mall to the Apple Store. They gave me a brand new iPhone 4 right out of the box. I sat there while they backed it up. I did not pay a dime. It was FREE!
I bought the thing from Apple. I’d rather take my chances dealing with ATT from what I’ve seen.
I could live without my cell phone but I don't want to. When I think of all the hours...... no.... days, weeks or more that I have sat at home waiting for a repair man or a delivery. “He will be there between 8am and 5pm” Then at 4:45pm you get a call that his last job is taking too long and you will have to reschedule OR you don't get a call at all and he just doesn't show up.
Now they just call me on my cell phone and I head home. Let him sit there and wait for me a few minutes.
Thanks for the warning. I’m afraid that buying an Apple product will change my voting pattern. Appreciate your “just saying’ “.
Then you are a VERY weak person. I have an IPhone 4 and love it....And yes I am still voting for Bachmann in the Primary AND General.
Is the iPad or iPhone able to use GPS with access to wifi and cell towers turned off?
The rules of writing an essay:
1. Say what you’re going to say.
2. Say what you have to say.
3. Say what you just said.
There you go - proof of the adverse effects of Apple products on one's political choices.
No I am not....maybe you are. I have known you for awhile and have zero issue with you. You don’t like Apple products big deal. I know that you are conservative and a good person. I still want you to vote for Bachmann though....lol.
My goodness, I have no issue with you either, but I was startled, perhaps mistakenly, in which case I apologize, when you apparently did not get the joke in the first post of mine to which you replied. I have nothing against Apple, (if I have to explain) and I disdain politicizing these companies’ products which we all use. In fact, Apple has made me a lot of moolah and the best people I know personally, use its products. Cheers.
jeeeezzzzz ....
I know an awfully lot of people with iPhones and most (by about 3 to 1) are far right wing wackos like me.
I work at a hospital, now if I worked at a university I would probably see your point. Of course, mine is an observation of a small group (50ish people) - yours is just a wild assed guess.
My youngest son, 2 PET/CT Techs, a physician recruiter (liberal), our Workforce Safety Coordinator, and a Manager that reports to me have all dumped their Androids in the last 4 months and bought iPhones. So, if I use the same scientific surveying techniques that you used, it appears to me that “almost all Android robotoids I have come across” have dumped their Androids and bought iPhones.
I can make ridiculous and unfounded statements just like you! So, am I right too?
Gee, that was fun ...... not
I didn’t really take you post personally at all. I was just saying “whatever” you are a jerk because I wanted you to say, “Whoa maybe Bachmann is something”....I also agree with you on companies that are supposedly conservative or liberal because it is all BS. Anyway, Merry Chirstmas!!!!
Do you have a boy crush?
How adorable.
