It was a moment to remember and Drew Brees handled it with the class that has always characterized his career. What impresses me about Brees (likewise with Joe Montana) is that he’s not the prototypical 6’4” quarterback. He look so ordinary — he could pass for a clerk at Home Depot — but when the football is in his hand, he weaves a special kind of magic.

You’re right re_nortex, he is a class act. So cool he did it with a touchdown pass. Saints just won the NFC South.

The Pack has no pass defensive qualities! :<(

Brees is great and all, but I don't even think he could make the Saints switch to the AFC.

It’s worth noting that Brees, a Pro Bowler for the Chargers, wasn’t needed by San Diego and was available to any team that wanted to sign him. Including my 49ers, who ignored the opportunity, and also ignored local boys Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers when they came out in the draft. Must be karma for having had Joe Montana and Steve Young back to back.

Indeed, a Packers-Saints Super Bowl will be one for the record books. :-)

Drew may best the Packers in the NFC championship but not the super bowl. To bad the Cowboys didn’t get him from the Chargers!

he’s not the prototypical 6’4” quarterback.

I saw him on Leno a few weeks back. I had to look up how tall he is afterwards, and I doubt he's even the listed six feet flat.

Two great QB's. Young is still one of my favorites.

You guys have had a great year.

Just hoping you guys lose to the Rams so Saints get the second seed.

How many games were in the NFL season when Marino played?
If it was not 16, then Brees’s record does not mean that much for now. But I’m sure he has a few good seasons left in him.

ANd they had a great stat for those that said, “the game was different then”. Brees exceeded the League yards per game passing by MORE than Marino exceeded his back in the day. He almost doubled the amount by which Marino exceeded his. I love me some Dan, but this is not an asterisk record.

in 84 there were 15 regular season games. This is the 15th game of this season. Brees does deserve cudos for a wonderful season. He is a humble guy.

Brees disagrees:

"He's actually a very good athlete. Caught every ball thrown his way. He covered Troy a little bit as well. There was a sequence where I'm throwing a route to Troy and President Obama is covering him. He did a pretty good job; actually knocked the ball away one time.

You guys have had a great year.

Yup, totally unexpected too. Sean Payton showed how quickly good coaching can turn a losing team around, but no one here expected Harbaugh to come up with a 12+ win season.

Just hoping you guys lose to the Rams so Saints get the second seed.

The 49ers can really use that bye week to try to get Ted Ginn, Delanie Walker and Kyle Williams healthy. As thin as the 49ers receiving corps already was, it got thinner in a tough win over the Seahawks.

Anyway, congrats to Brees and Saints fans on breaking Marino's record - Brees is a class act all the way.

They had 16 games in '84, same as now. The 49ers went 15-1 (the loss was by a FG to the Steelers as time expired), and steamrolled Marino and the Fins in the SB.

No doubt in my mind that Brees could play for my team.
I get a little frustrated when today's players accomplishments get compared to players of the past.
I get into discussions with my 30 year old son about great running backs. Of course he never got to see Jim Brown play.
But once I point out that Brown did what he did playing only 12 games a season and all he can say is that Jim Brown when Brown played, defensive players were not as big as they
are now.
I get into the same discussion with him about Johnny Unitas.
Jimmy does not think he could be a starting quarterback in today's NFL. I guess it is all relative, but at 1 time, Unitas held just about every quarterback record in the books. I think he still holds 1 for the most consecutive games with a touchdown pass.

And back then, players did not dance around the field every time they made a good play, even an average play. That sort of spoils the game for me. A running back gains 5 yards and makes a 1st down, he acts like he just scored the winning touchdown in the superbowl.

You’re correct that Unitas still holds the record for consecutive touchdowns in a game. Brees is 5 games away from breaking that record. That record may be tough to break.

Pack has a great secondary. Woodson is arguably the best in the business. Their turnover ratio is ridiculous. Their problems on defense are not in the secondary. If the Packers OL gets back from injuries, I don’t see the Saints as a problem at Lambeau in January. Would likely be a good game, and can go either way if the Pack don’t show up to play.

I once saw a show on TV that was highlighting the athleticism of different sports.

Drew Breeze was the football athlete and asked to throw a football through a tire at 25 yds.. He went 10 for 10.
