The thief raided the Halifax bank in Cheapside in the City of London and demanded £700,000 in cash from the bank worker.
But after making his demands, the crook - who was wearing shades and a flat cap - handed over his gun to the cashier instead of a bag.
The male cashier froze as the crook realised his mistake and made a grab for his gun before running off as the security shutters came down.
Bank staff immediately raised the alarm, but the thief escaped after stealing a bank worker's bike and pedalling off.
This week bosses at the bank put up a £25,000 reward for information about the robbery and police have also released CCTV of the man just before he entered the bank on October 22 last year.
A spokesman for the City of London Police said this week: "CCTV of the incident appears to show a man threatening a bank employee with a gun, before demanding £700,000.
"The bank's security shutters were quickly activated, leaving the suspect empty-handed apart from an employee's bicycle, which he initially used to make his getaway.

So was the cashier arrested for gun possession?
I guess he got the Cheapside. LOL
Can’t be all that difficult to get a handgun there if this guy, who doesn’t seem to know which end the bullets come out of, can get a hold of one.
The cashier’s line should have been, “you’re new at this aren’t you”.
All of that practice wasted...’Give them the bag not the gun; give them the bag not the gun; give them the bag not the gun.’
Shades and a flat cap? It was Elton John Ba Ba Ba Benny and the jets.......
Too bad he didn’t steal a Chevy Volt. They would have caught him within two blocks.
Cashier-gun possession- beat me to it!
“Too bad he didnt steal a Chevy Volt. They would have caught him within two blocks.”
Of course he’d be burned to a crisp when they caught him...
Here, hold my gun.
A variation on the “Hold muh beer” meme.
The onlything that would have made it funnier is if, during his escape, he tried to crash through the window, only to be stopped and knocked unconscious by the safety glass.
Same here. I recall the recent case of an Englishman who found a handgun in his front yard. He took it to the police, thinking it was the right thing to do, but when he got to the station, he was arrested for gun possession.
“Cashier-gun possession- beat me to it!”
Ditto here. You know something is credible when many predict the same outcome. It must really suck to be a British subject now. No wonder I meet so many in the U.S.
