Park City resort hopes Native American blessing brings snow; storm pattern expected to change

PARK CITY, Utah — Some have danced for rain.

In Utah and other parts of the West, it’s all about the white stuff.

It’s why officials at Park City Mountain Resort brought in members of the Northern Ute Tribe to perform a snow blessing.

On Saturday, they prayed, danced and chanted as hundreds of helmet-clad skiers and boarders watched and hoped the ritual would elicit more cooperation from Mother Nature.

A similar gathering in California was planned for Sunday at Lake Tahoe with dancers from the Paiute, Shoshone and Washoe tribes.

If ever there was a year it is needed, this is it.

December was among the driest on record in Northern California. The California Department of Water Resources reported the snowpack water content throughout the Sierra Nevada at 19 percent of the average for early January.

In Utah, snow levels are less than 50 percent of average.

Park City has been forced to make 40 percent more snow than at this time last year.

“Our snowmakers have been working around the clock, so we said it is time to put in a call to Mother Nature,” said Krista Parry, marketing director at Park City Mountain Resort.

The Indian name for Park City was reputed to be "Hole in the Sky"....since it never snowed there.

At least according to the local Indians, who told me that while skiing one day...

The officials at the resort obviously don’t know anything about the Gore Effect. All they have to do is sponsor a globull warming/climate change conference at their place, invite the Goracle and his eco-nut associates and next thing you know they’ll have the worst winter weather they can think of.

I think I’ll email them and clue them in on this!

Those little white flakes are the equivalent of fleets of armored trucks full of money driving into town. Skiing and tourism are the bulk of Utah’s income.

It’s definitely past time for some severe winter weather.

Okay. I emailed them the idea. I even suggested to them inviting protesters to stage an anti-AGW protest. The snow will be so bad that they won’t even be able to protest in it similar to what happened in D.C. in 2008 or 2009.

No, doubt it! It was the naked snow dance we did on the last full moon! It worked at Beaver Creek!

I hope the dancers get some good money for the gig. There are some excellent Native American dance groups out there maintaining various traditional dances.

Okay, you want snow, we got some for you.

Weather (specifically the high altitude jet stream) patterns so far have been running the big northern Pacific storms up through Alaska, Canada and then down through the northeast. (Alaska’s got snow up past the roof timbers, Montana had a Brown Christmas.)

However, those jet streams shifted this last couple of weeks so that those storms have started coming through the Washington/Oregon coast.

Got our first little storm last week here in southern Montana (down in the flats....the mountains here have been getting the stuff ever since October), and we’re tying our hats on good and tight for the critter that’s coming in today and is supposed to last until the weekend. Supposed to get a foot or so at lower elevations, two or three times that up in the rocks and the bottom half of the storm is probably going to extend down as far as New Mexico.

Oh, yeah. It’s started snowing here just since I got started posting this......

AGW is BS, but Prayer works.

Let’s see. They’ve rejected God, otherwise they would be praying for snow.

Now, they turn to one of the tribes that were murdered or driven from their homes because they were “less than human”.

Ain’t it funny what some people do serve themselves.
