Vanity - Planning honeymoon trip to NE part of America.
what day is this? | Just l'il ole me

Posted on 02/02/2012 8:16:00 PM PST by West Texas Chuck

I proposed to She Who Must Be Obeyed on Christmas Day, in front of all the usual suspects. So now the marriage machine is in full stroke and I am planning our honeymoon. I think we have settled on a roadtrip through the Appalachians up to Arlington. Probably come back through the FL panhandle, over to Nawlins and back home to Dallas.

I have a few thoughts and many questions ...

Point of order. D.C ain’t the Northeast. You’re talking mid-Atlantic States. Northeast starts no farther south than Pa.

Congrats to you and She!!!

My advise is not to try to get too much sightseeing in on the trip. Relax. If y make it to Arlington, great, but if there are better things along the way, just drive NE a few days, then circle around back home.

This will avoid many, many arguments!

Niagara Falls is a full day’s drive in each direction, well N from DC on the NY/Canadian border, so may not fit in with this trip. Gettysburg (PA), on the other hand, is little more than an hour away from DC and in the general direction as Harper’s Ferry WV that I’d include, time permitting.

VA has Williamsburg, Charlottesville (Monticello and UVA); Bedford, VA has the D-Day Museum. In Alexandria VA, close to DC and Arlington Natl Cemetery, the “Old Town” section is charming; it has the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier of the American Revolution in the graveyard behind the Old Presbyterian Meeting House; and it is only a few mile N of Mt. Vernon, which is near Woodlawn Plantation and Gunston Hall.

If you belong to AAA, go to one of their offices, and their staff should be able to help set out what’s along the way. My daughter went to Tulane and every Spring/Fall, we’d do a road trip between NOLA and DC, it was great! If you want to go all the way to the East Coast, there’s Charleton (Ft Sumpter and Ft Sullivan), Savannah, Hilton Head, then cut across to Atlanta. Whole lotta wonderful USA to be seen. The whole region should be gorgeous in October, and neither too hot nor too chilly.

Lots of luck, Chuck, on your wedding trip, we wish you and your bride-to-be a long, happy life together.

Seems to me you are NOT going to the Northeast, or New England. DC is only the tip of the bottom of NE, if not also part of the Mid-Atlantic, or the southeast historically.

Anyway, if DC is your northernmost point, I would 2nd Yorktown (but DON’T go to the “Yorktown Victory Center” http://historyisfun.org/ unless you want to see a museum of ALL the Revolution; you want the visitor center for the details of the seige site http://www.nps.gov/yonb/index.htm). Not to mention the rest of the Historic Triangle with Williamsburg and Jamestown. If you don’t have alot of time, hit the REAL sites (not the historyisfun sites); if you do fine, but with a long drive I doubt you do.

Another place that’s great is the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. Don’t be scared by the $$$$$ to get in - you’ll be shocked. We were shocked at the price - and the estate - way back when when it was much less.

Also, VA is just great. Check out some Civil War sites if you can, and also the natural features along the Shenandoah. Natural Bridge, Luray Caverns. Lots of caverns there. Really cool.

In TN, go to Lookout Mountain (CW) - on the incline railway. I’d tell you to stay at Choo-Choo Hilton but I don’t think it exists anymore even as a hotel.

That’s all for now.

“Smithsonian air and space museum at Dulles Airport,”

This is the UDVAR-HAZY site, so as not to confuse it with the NASM in DC proper.

“Chalmette Battlefield”

That place must be a mess. I know it was washed over from Katrina. I hope they have recovered. We saw it - thank God - 3 months before it was washed out.

“Antique Auto Museum” - yes, that’s the Antique Automobile Club of America’s. AACA is HQed in Hershey - the biggest most important car show of the year is there at Hersheypark.

While you’re still below the Mason/Dixon, you *might* wanna adjust that thought.

We’re still touchy.

;D

And in the mountains of south-central/southwest PA, you’ll still get your mouth smacked for it, too....LOL

“It made it possible for the focus to be us together instead of where we were going next and what time we had to be there.”

Disagree. We likewise love exploring, not sitting on a beach doing the typical vacation thing. Our honeymoon was full of fun and seeing lots of places and sites - riverboat excursion, New Orleans (including the battle site), then driving up to KY and seeing the sites there before heading north to home. And no, we didn’t use GPS, although it was only a few years ago! If you have wanderlust and curiosity - go for it. Explore. You may not get a chance like that to see so many things for a good while.

As far as I'm concerned Arkansas is far northeast Texas. ;) With ya, bro!

NC was far north enough for me.

If youre going to Graceland...Memphis...

Go to the Peabody Hotel to see the ducks...

there is a great BBQ place a block or so away from the hotel..

You can go 200 miles along I-40 to Nashville

Loretta Lynns farm is on the way...

another 200 miles along I-40 to Knoxville...Home of the Vols

a few miles east of Knoxville is I-80 which will take you north through some beautiful country to camp in

Theres a memorial to Davy Crocket in that part of TN..

I usually get onto I-66 at exit 300 in VA and go straight into DC

try not to be close to DC at rush hour

the “parking lot” can start from 50 miles out..

While you’re heading NE, you ought to hit New York. Catch a show. See the museums.

On your way to Washington, stop in Richmond and see Maymont. Lovely old Southern mansion.

The cheapest hotels in Washington are outside DC. Check Arlington.

You must see Arlington National Cemetery, the Iwo Jima Memorial, the memorials in DC, do the Capitol and White House tours (call your Congresscritter to arrange it),

NE...they don’t like CCW up there. Leave it at home and carry knives or mace.

Hey Chuck it sounds like a good trip once you have been married for a while.

This is your honeymoon. Chuck Usually there is not too much touring if you catch my drift? It should be completely relaxed and everything very close by.

Here is where you need to go to relax after the Wedding. A resort in the Caribbean would be a good idea. Think St. Thomas, Bahamas, U.S. Virgin Islands or Cancun.

There are a lot of very reasonably priced trips for newly weds. Check with USAA, AAA, etc for discounts too.

Theres a huge freshwater aquarium but I prefer the one in Atlanta..

Chattanooga is the home of Coca Cola and Moon Pies
