Britain's Queen Elizabeth celebrates 60 years on throne

LONDON - Britain's Queen Elizabeth celebrated 60 years on the throne on Monday to become the second British monarch to reach that milestone.

During her reign, the royal family has faced tumultuous times and moments of plummeting popularity, above all after the death in 1997 of Princess Diana, the hugely popular ex-wife of her son and heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles.

But the royals are enjoying fresh support after the wedding last year of the queen's grandson, Prince William, second-in-line to the throne, to Catherine Middleton.

Elizabeth II, 85, became queen aged 25 on Feb. 6, 1952 on the death of her father George VI, while on tour in Kenya with her husband Prince Philip.

That is some serious constipation. I don't know about the celebration part.

I read the new biography about her and the life of a monarch is so demanding that you have to give Her Majesty credit for holding up so well for 60 years. Long live the Queen.

The 18-year-old Princess Elizabeth helps Britain's efforts in World War II when she joins the Women's Auxiliary Territorial Service as an honorary Second Subaltern. She trained as a military truck driver and mechanic, before being promoted to Junior Commander five months later. She is the last surviving head of state to have served during World War II.

A minor correct - yes, she was originally appointed as an honorary Second Subaltern, but by the time those photos were taken, she had been commissioned with the substantive rank - the honorary appointment had been her father’s last attempt to keep her out of uniform until she was 21 (by which time they knew the war would be over) - but it didn’t work.

She remained as a reservist until the day she became Queen - by which time she was Captain Elizabeth Windsor, Women’s Royal Army Corps.

I was living in Munich, Germany when King George died. I will always remember the newspaper headline the next day............”The King is dead. Long live the Queen.”

Odd, isn’t it, what sticks in one’s mind.

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN

What a beautiful young girl, and a lovely and gracious QUEEN she is, and I pray she will reign for many more years.

I remember watching her crowning when I was a young girl, it was a beautiful occasion, even on our black and white TV.
