How do I (we) counteract the success of this birth control wedge issue? (vanity)
self | self

Posted on 02/18/2012 8:42:00 AM PST by occam's chainsaw

Now that the left is successfully employing this wedge argument over insurance birth control mandates, what can we do on an individual basis to counteract it? I am suddenly seeing local boards and even my face book page being flooded with emotional posts by hysterical women who claim their uteruses (uteri?) are being attacked. They are being successfully distracted from the real issues and seem quite anxious to throw their vote away for red herrings. They have been tricked and I am trying to figure out the best way to dodge their emotional arguments and enlighten them. Some (most) of my are much better at political debate than I am. Any helpful advice?

Tell them:

“Birth control is not a right. Anyone choosing to use birth control should spend their own money on it.”

or,

“I should not be taxed to pay for someone else’s birth control.”

Keep it simple. This should not be on your dime. It is wrong to force you to pay for it.

birth control ONLY wedges out liberals who want all their free stuff but don't want to pay more taxes. And those are the only people upset, and they are not needed.

I always squelch such arguments by saying “I don’t see why women get the right to commit murder out of convenience and men don’t.”

This is sleight of hand...obama has focused our attention on this ridiculous issue when the object is to get rid of him administration, and obamacare will go along with it...THAT will solve the problem.

Otherwise it's just being used as another pinprick to try and villify those "nasty republicans".

We need to learn to ignore his minutia and focus on the big picture...all of these problems will dwindle in importance if we get the "king" off his throne in November.

Dude - the women you describe were NEVER going to be pulling the Republican lever anyway.

we should be asking...”why not just throw in a requirement to pay for abortions too?”. By the left’s logic, a woman has a right to an abortion, therefore, why shouldn’t a religious organization be forced to pay for that too? ...please explain the difference!

That’s where I’d like to take the discussion...it’d separate those with no problem on the “paying for contraception” but oppose abortion and those that have no problem with either.

I reject the premise of the title. What makes you think this is a successful wedge issue?

I don't think American women are as foolish as you're implying...

I just agree with liberals and tell them I am pro-choice...... Then I say, and I choose life, which means you obviously choose death.

Their little, pointed heads go poof!

The thing you DON’T do is conflate abortion and birth control.

Dude - the women under discussion were NEVER going to vote at all this time around until Obama got them riled up with this red herring. They're disgusted with the pretender in chief. His strategy is to get them so angry with our side that they will still vote.

I got a chuckle from a liberal after I posted on my Facebook page that I wanted to vote for a candidate who would force PETA to pay for my pastrami.

Analogy works well.

“Birth control is not a right....etc...

Disastrously wrong answer. Tell them there is no argument about contraception out there, only about the government attacking religious freedom. Explain that they have trusted sources of information who are lying to them, that no one has proposed restricting their right to buy and use birth control and no one ever will.

Tell them they should direct their anger at those who are lying to them and needlessly alarming them for political gain.

Pass along the article by Democrat Dick Morris calling out this strategy to try to blur the lines between birth control and abortion. It is pretty damning they are trying to manipulate people. People on all sides should be insulted by this.

Considering this was one of Clinton’s advisers, you can use the issue to actually turn off Clinton Democrats to Obama.

Analogy does work well.

I told a friend that if taxpayers can be forced to financially support the “rights” of other citizens, then taxpayers need to pony-up and pay for millions of rifles, tactical shotguns and handguns for citizens unable to afford such. And, in order to remain well-regulated, each citizen needs to have access to “free” ammo, likely 200-300 rounds each week.

“we should be asking...’why not just throw in a requirement to pay for abortions too?’.”

Actually, that is what the “morning after” pill does...and it is included in this mandate.

I would ask questions on the comments and get them to state whatever false claim they are making, then knock it out of the park. There is no issue at hand to ‘take away contraception’. It is purely manufactured. This is low hanging fruit for our side to return the discussion to Obamacare. Whatever BS they state, bring it back to the fed govt control issues. Don’t make it about social issues or personal beliefs. That is what the left is banking on.

Facebook friends are going CRAZY over this isssue. One comforting another saying this will be good for O as the “enlightened” women will be supporting him in droves.
They are up in arms about the women being refused to speak (when the hearing was about Presidential overreach) not women’s rights.
They don’t want to hear anything but what fits with their agenda.
So I continue to ruffle their feathers with my conservative perspective. Enlightened Californians VS. hick town gal...

The answer is simple. We tell the truth. We expose the lies. We stand up for strong principles and we don’t let this distract us from the important issues.
