swords are safer than basketballs, eh?

LOL

Nope, not the reason. In the SCA, you fight armored, what kind of personal protection do you wear playing basketball?

You’re very right. Even the largest of longswords were still only about three or four pounds.

I should have added that for practice wasters (wooden swords) there really is only one place that does it right. New Stirling Arms. There’s lots of decent wood wasters out there, but New Stirling is head and shoulders above all of them.

I’ve made it a mission to get at least one of everything they make. I even have the trebuchet. :-)

More info further down-thread. In short, the “swords” are really rattan (a light, strong type of wood, a bit like bamboo) inside plastic hose. The shields, armor, and helmets are real steel, with padding underneath. As others have noted, the real danger is from heatstroke from exerting yourself under all that armor and padding in the summer sun.

Craftsmanship. High quality materials. Their wasters are balanced to handle as close to steel as I’ve seen. You can feel it the minute you pick one up. They just feel right.

Saw this and thought it might be up your alley...

Man, is it ever RAINING here. Buckets and buckets, water 5” deep flowing in the normally dry drainage ditch. I’m starting to rust!

Sure is.

There a Renn Faire in MD that’s worth the ticket price.

http://www.rennfest.com/

They have jousting with *real* lances and fights with *real* swords.

They really wale on each other and the sound of steel hitting steel give me chills.

There are artisans who make Damascus swords that will bend into a “U” and then snap back into shape.
[thousands of dollars so no, I didn’t get one]

We did have rain...now we have ferocious horizontal wind.

I reckon March is coming right on time.

;D
