My faithful old Sharp TV just bit the dust tonight after so many years I can't count. I don't watch TV programs at all, no cable, no nothing---I just use the TV to watch my DVD movies. So now that this TV is kaput, what's all that about LCDs, LEDs, plasmas, 720p, 1080p, and all that other headache causing stuff? I've been reading up on this online, but I am just overloaded with information here.
Could I get some input from our Freepers as to what kind of TV I should get just to watch my DVDs in the bedroom? I would appreciate that so much!

I have a Vizio 37" that I paid about the same for, two years ago. I love it, but if I didn't have it. I'd jump at this offer.
Another consideration is getting the same brand TV as your DVD player. I have Samsung TVs and DVD players, which means the remotes are compatible and in your case, everything can be done with the DVD remote, since you don't use it for cable or on-air. If your DVD player is ancient, consider getting a Bluray DVD player. They're pretty cheap now and will give you a much better picture.
Avoid all the gimmicks like built-in wifi or wifi ready, since you don't seem to use such features. One thing getting really cheap is 3D plasma TVs, which might be of interest to you since movies are coming out in 3D.
I’ve seen a few 3-D movies, but I haven’t personally seen any movies where seeing it in 3-D made the difference for me.
Ditto that. I received a Best Buy brand TV and DVD player from my daughter as a gift and have been very pleased with both.
I upgraded the house to HD last fall. I have one more TV to get and am going to get this one. I have found that the online features on the various machines, TV, DVD players, etc. Just don’t quite cut it.
The wife just wants to turn it on and watch, volumne goes up and down when pushing the button. She does have a DVR which she loves. Having to change inputs is not necessary. I do have an extra 36” Sony flat screen CRT for free for anyone that can lift 200lbs. :)
Get a free one of Craigslist. People can’t give older TV’s away.
The advice about looking at Craig’s list is good for your needs. Or go to a second hand shop and pick up an old used TV w/a DVD player. Should keep you happy for a few more years.
Please remember that ALL storage media will die one day. Do not rely on a single storage device or one day you will find you have lost everything. If you go this route, backup everything on a regular basis.
As for the above review, the 42 and 47 inch LG TV had similar comments, caveat emptor!
I’ll echo what some others have said.
First, determine the size of your viewing space and how far you sit from your TV set. Then go on line and find a webpage that tells you the optimal size TV you should get. If the set you get is too small, it won’t please you. If the set you get is too big for your space, it won’t look very good.
Then go to the stores and get an idea what brand looks best to you. They’re NOT all the same. Don’t buy anything. Go home and look up reviews of the models that interest you. Maybe that’ll help knock some of ‘em out of consideration, if they’ve gotten terrible reviews.
And, yes, go 1080p, for sure.
Oh, and keep that “brightness” button in mind. In the stores, virtually every set is always set on the extreme “BRIGHT!” setting. That’s not the way you’ll want to watch movies, so keep that in mind both before and after you buy the set.

The install chairs on monitors now? Wow!
Go all out and get at least a 50-incher with as many input/output connections as possible, especially for speakers. With a big picture, you’ll never regret having the big sound capability to go along with it.
I’m sorry your TV died. I cried bitter tears when mine died. I used it only for watching DVDs. Since I don’t feel that a TV should be the main focus in a room, I bought small. I’m not excited about actors being in my face when watching them in a small room.
I ended up buying a Sylvania LD195SSX 19-Inch HD Flat Panel LCD/DVD Combo. I’m happy with it. I like that the DVDs are inserted from the top. You just plop them down and they’re ready to play.
Later, for an upstairs bedroom, I bought a Toshiba 15LV505 15.6-Inch Widescreen LCD TV with Built-in DVD Player. This model I don’t like. Every time I turn it on it searches for a cable connection, something I don’t have nor intend to get any time soon. The DVDs are inserted at the side. Something about this feels weird. It’s as if you have to be more careful about how you insert them.
Although I’m happy with the new LCD TVs, I do miss my old TV. It was simple.
There are so many good cheap LCD tv’s these days
You can get a great quality 40 inch LCD for less then $350 these days
almost any one of them is good.
plug it into your computer and get rid of cable -there is MORE THAN ENOUGH content on the internet these days
