Pink Floyd's Roger Waters says Britain should return Falklands to Argentina

Pink Floyd star Roger Waters has reportedly stated that Britain should return the Falkland Islands, saying "Las Malvinas belong to Argentina".

In an interview with Chilean television, Waters, who is on tour in South America, allegedly said he was "as ashamed as I possibly could be of our colonial past ... When we were out raping and plundering and stealing".

The reported comments came as Argentina's industry minister called for all British imports to be banned as tensions escalate between the two countries ahead of the 30th anniversary of the Falklands conflict.

A journalist for the Chilean TVN state channel claimed Waters had made the comments during an exclusive interview on Tuesday. Amaro Gómez-Pablos tweeted: "Roger Waters was categorical: Las Malvinas belong to Argentina."

In a later press conference in Chile, Waters was more cautious, stating: "Clearly there needs to be a solution to the problem of the varying claims [to the Falklands]—the claims are so convoluted and so old, going back as they do to the 17th century. It's not a simple situation. My view is that certainly it saved Margaret Thatcher's political career at the time at the cost of a great many Argentine and British lives, which disgusted me then and still does now. I was never a huge fan of Margaret Thatcher."

Pink Floyd's twelfth album, The Final Cut, was heavily influenced by the Falklands conflict, with several critical references to Baroness Thatcher. …

Shut up and sing, Roger.

Love your music, hate your air-headed politics.

Aria, of Pacific Northwest USA, says leave what Margaret Thatcher fought for alone.

So why not...I figure I’m at least as intelligent as some rock band person.

But that said, what do the Falklands have that anyone wants?

Did Roger consult with the people that live on the islands?

Or is he just being imperial in a politically correct manner? It's pretty harsh to give your citizens to another country with a spotty history.

Never mind that the Falklands were never taken from Argentina to begin with.

Now we know who the bad guy was when it comes to the break with Pink Floyd . . .

To me, Floyd was more about Gilmour and Rick Wright. I prefer Echoes over The Wall.

Shut up and sing, Roger.

Unfortunately the last time Roger Waters got on a kick about the Falklands we got the Final Cut and Pink Floyd broke up soon after

I love Pink Floyd’s music, but Waters has always struck me as one of those “artiste” types who is long on wind and short on brains. His solo stuff is so preachy it’s hard to listen to.

“Waters, who is on tour in South America, allegedly said he was “as ashamed as I possibly could be of our colonial past ... When we were out raping and plundering and stealing”. “

If he’s pissed at this aspect of his country’s legacy he ought to be irate that the Italians have forgotten their history of the same that lasted for hundreds of years more than English colonialism and with far more brutality inflicted on the conquered.

Always knew that.

I got to hand it to the rest of the band for putting up with his idiocy for such a very long time. I dont care how talented a lot of people think he is.

How can the UK “return” something to Argentina which never belonged to Argentina?

While The Final Cut is my favorite PF album (don’t ask why, just accept that it is ;) Waters made a career of one thing. Daddy issues.

His entire lyrical output is over the loss of his father and little more than a cathartic exercise in whining to the world about it.

Some of it worked spectacularly, some didn’t, but Gilmore saved PF from a rapid descent into obscurity because without his Strat work, PF would be just a ‘pre-Emo’ Emo band.

And yes, I am donning the asbestos underwear for the fire about to come my way ;)
