Interesting add-on for Firefox - Collusion

Posted on 03/03/2012 6:52:18 PM PST by djf

I just installed the "Collusion" add-on to Firefox. Anybody else tried this one?

It shows a graphic of websites that are supposedly tracking you when you open a page.

So far, FR is clean. Rense IS NOT! Neither is Drudge!

Not sure exactly what it means by "websites that are tracking me". Cookies? One of those weird pixel thingamajigs?

I may leave it installed, I might trash it, not sure yet...

I installed it this morning. FR is about as clean as they come. It’ll be nice when they upgrade and allow us to delete the cookies right from the page.

I haven’t used it, but DNT+ (Do not Track Plus) has been up and running on Firefox ever since I heard about it here.

Seems to work very well. BTW, I allow websites like FR to track me with Google Analytics.

I strongly suggest both of you try NoScript, if you aren’t already doing so.

Wondering... if you add those things that pop up to your LMHOSTS file will it block them? Still not sure what it means by “they are tracking me”...

I recently installed a similar add-on that works with both Firefox and IE.

It is called DoNotTrack+ from http://abine.com.

I just did an upgrade and it stopped 25 Google trackers.

What does NoScript do?

Already got it. I’m inclined to think that some places have figured out a way to turn it off for their site if you temporarily allow scripts for that site. I go out about every other day and check through the things that are allowed by Noscript and delete anything I’m not sure about.

Basically I think they mean that when you visit a site, other sites are alerted to your web surfing habits. I know that some of them are basically market research sites.

One example of how you know someone is watching is through ads customized to your interests. For instance, I’m a Santorum supporter so I get Santorum ads everywhere. I visit lots of photography and photoshop sites so I get ads for camera and photo editing software all the time.

What is the downside to adding this? Is it a monthly fee?

Interestingly enough, FR doesn't even show up unless you visit a thread with pictures. Then you'll get a bubble showing imageshack or photobucket etc.

Here is what I get just looging into my comcast account. Yahoo and a couple of market research type sites. The lightbulb is the comcast mail server and the clear bubbles are the trackers. I have two emails from yahoo in my inbox.

Thanks to your graphic, I now got Imageshack tracking me!

;-)

Actually, mail-wise, I still use Outlook Express and he does things with a POP3 server interface so never actually has to use HTTP protocol to the server. So I can get my mail with no conditions...
