Dog People vs. Cat People: What Pet Preference Says About You
ABC News ^ | March 9, 2012 | Dan Harris and Keturah Grey

Ask anyone on the street whether they're a cat or a dog person, and chances are, they've got a quick answer. Like the choice between Coke or Pepsi, or chocolate or vanilla, how you respond to cats versus dogs could say a lot about you.

"Dog people are a little more outgoing," a dog owner at the Westminster Dog Show told ABC News. "Cat people are a little more aloof, because that's just how cats are."

Karen Hessel, the proud "mama" to 3-year-old Ripley, a golden retriever, said, "They say that cats are very intelligent but I haven't seen that yet in a cat, but I know my dog is brilliant."

Over at the Black Diamond Cat Show in Kimberton, Pa., cat owners were telling a different story, saying intelligence is the key difference between dog and cat owners. Cat people, they say, are simply smarter.

A major study at the University of Texas shows that there really is a difference between "dog people" and "cat people."

Those who define themselves as "dog people" are more extroverted, more agreeable and more conscientious than self-described "cat people." Those who love felines, though, were found to be less traditional, more creative and more neurotic.

LOL! A friend of mine had 2 of them. The female was okay, the male was the most insane dog I have ever seen in my life. He tried everything. Obedience classes, neutering, shock collars, the dogs was just crazy. He bit or tried to bite everyone, he was so hyper he bounced off walls. He finally got rid of him.

...cats have staff.

Yes, they do...I have been 'employed' by them in some capacity for over fifty years. Think I'll see so much as a watch or a gift certificate..?

Pfffft.

Well, I never spent any time around Irish Setters or Cavaliers so I can't comment. But I'm sure there is a certain level of dumbness that once you get to it's all a matter of opinion. LOL. But bet if they are as dumb as pugs they are just as loveable too!

Actually,

the neediness is MUCH MORE related to

the degree of early childhood

ATTACHMENT DISORDER.

This is the best book I know on the topic:

Attachments: Why You Love, Feel, and Act the Way You Do

http://www.amazon.com/Attachments-Why-You-Love-Feel/dp/0785297375/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1331399651&sr=8-1

When children don’t receive SUFFICIENT-FOR-THE-INDIVIDUAL emotional bonding and love the first 6 or so years of life, the neediness holes never get filled and may even tend to get bigger. True for men and women. They show it differently.

As a psychologist . . . I’d probably say that over 30+ years of counseling and teaching . . . more women CAME ACROSS AS desperately needy than men.

Men are loathe to appear needy—particularly desperately needy—regardless of how needy they are. Men turn their neediness inward or to addictions or physical work or hobbies or sports.

FWIW

Dogs are so annoying and need to be kept outside. They are always smelly and love to roll in dirt, they are needy, clingy and need to be let out all the time...not to mention they are slobs.

Ummm no! All dogs do NOT stink, only certain breeds. Mine have no odor whatsoever and they don’t roll in the dirt. They are far from needy and clingy because they are an independent breed. Slobs? My dogs don’t lick their smelly breath all over their body then get on the furniture or bed. Cat uses the litter box, licks itself all over, gets on the bed, lovely, now you get to lay in whatever it stepped on in the litter box and it’s saliva.

We always had one or more cats until a few years ago. I don’t hate cats, but come on......cats have their issues too.

Not if you take the time to really train them from kittenhood. My last cat, a big tough tom, was so good. If he started giving the table or the countertops the eye, all I had to do was make eye contact with him and say firmly, but not loudly, “No.” And he would cease and desist.

I agree, that works with some, but not all, it depends on the cat. If you leave the house, they will all go where they aren’t allowed and if you leave food on the counter, if you leave or turn your back, they’re getting on that counter.

We used to have a Lilac point Siamese that was obsessed with corn on the cob. She just went crazy when she smelled it. If there was an ear left in the pan on the stove, and we didn’t get to it before the water cooled, she would get it out of the water, and take it under the bed to eat it.

LOL! Funny. I agree, if you're not around, they may just do what they want. Then again, so will some dogs.

I like cats, but they are rodents compared to dogs like the loyal German Shepherd

My lassie collie would wait at the fence line of our lane for me to come home from school. Never crossed the fence line. We didn’t train that.

He doesn’t like dogs. It was just PR. I don’t know what he likes. Golf, I guess.

Barky likes dog just fine. That's the only meat he ate growing up in Indonesia. The mainstream media never brings that up. But if a Republican drove with a dog carrier on his car roof we never hear the end of it.
