GREEN TEA REDUCES BRAIN DAMAGE FROM LEAD POISONING

Drinking green tea may provide protection against neurotoxicity induced by consuming high levels of lead in foods, according to a new study published in the journal NeuroToxicology. The findings suggest the combination of green tea and the chemical lead acetate causes less damage to the brain and nervous system compared to lead acetate alone.

In the United States, levels of heavy metals, including lead, should not exceed 10 parts per million (ppm) in any food ingredient. Imported products, such as spices and powders, pose a particular threat, because many countries do not share the United States’ standards concerning lead. In fact, in 2010, four cases of lead poisoning in Indian children in the Boston area were linked to consumption of Indian spices that were used as seasonings as well as in ceremonial powders commonly used to mark newborn Indian infants for religious and cultural purposes. Investigators discovered after the children received treatment and the parents discontinued use of the spices and/or powders, all of the children had improved blood lead levels.

For this study, five groups of rats were fed placebos, lead acetate, lead acetate along with green tea, solely green tea for one month, or lead acetate for one month, followed by green tea for 15 days.

Lead acetate administration induced loss of body weight and decreased concentration of reduced glutathione and superoxide dismutase activity (SOD) activity in brain tissues, as well as significantly high DNA fragmentation and pathological changes. Co-administration of green tea with lead acetate significantly alleviated these adverse effects.

cilantro also binds heavy metals. You can make an easy extract by dicing a bunch of it, then throwing it in vodka & straining after a month or so.

Cheap and easy.

“For this study, five groups of rats were fed placebos”

You mean green tea reduces the brain-dead idiocy of Rat’s?

Speaking of Tea, I just received my first case of Rush’s “Two if by Tea.” I got the regular sweet tea. Man, I can’t stop drinking the stuff! It really is great!

We supported rush by buying 2 cases last week too. It was the first time I tasted the raspberry. It’s quite clean tasting and delicious. It’s not too sweet. We got blueberry too, which we’ve had before. Luscious. I can’t do caffeine so I only can have a taste. But they are really good.

I have seen discussions about people taking a cilantro infusion who then excreted heavy metals. What I did not see discussed is whether they tested the cilantro first to see if it contained those heavy metals. Absent that information I would not rely on cilantro to chelate lead or cadmium.

Do you drink the vodka or eat the strained product?
Or do both?

You drink the vodka part....maybe first eat a teaspoon of chlorella, and then drink the vodka part. This would provide maximal absorption.

It's too late now, but I would liked to have tried that concoction on my step kids...they were and proved to be dumber than a bag of rocks.

I always thought their mom teethed them on the window sills up north.

If the cilantro that was used in the reported test contained the heavy metal that was later excreted then the conclusion that cilantro chelates heavy metal is false. Switching to organically grown cilantro misses the point.

I would actually be interested to know if cilantro has this effect, I just can’t trust the conclusion of a test that failed to look for presence of the metals before the fact and don’t think anyone should. Sorry.
