Woo Hoo! Pretty much finished the PLA Carrier! Have rigging and personnel to paint and put on, but will do that as I go on to other models.
PLA Aircraft Carrier complete with airwing on deck - April 23rd, 2012

Well, I finally got all the deck equipment and aircraft completed, flat clear coat on the aircraft and deck equipment, and the flat clear coat on the carrier with the air wing placed on deck, on the aft elevaor and in the hangar deck. I will still paint and put numerous personnel on the decks and various platforms and levels, but that will occur, along with other updates and modifications (ie. the rigging) as I go. For now, I will let the pictures of the complete carrier tell the story:

STATUS as of April 23, 2012

Well, it's been a great build. Lots of hours. I see many areas where I can improve and will put these to use on the next builds. I still have the personnel to paint and place on the deck, but have decided to do that as I go along. I have decided to do the Type 052C escort next, kind of as an interim, less intensive, shorter build, the PLAN Lanzhou DDG-171. After that I will do the USS Enterprise and then one of her major escorts, the USS Lassen, and Arleigh Burke class AEGIS DDG-82. So that my schedule will hopefully be as follows:

  1. By June 1, 2012: Complete PLAN LAnzhou, DDG-171.
  2. By Oct 1, 2012: Complete the USS Enterprise, CVN-65.
  3. By Dec 1, 2012: Complete the USS Lassen, DDG-82.
At that point I will go back and complete the PLAN Carrier group, including Trumpeter's DDG-168, Guangzhou; DDG-139, Ningbo; FFG-570, Huangshan and the Hobby Boss PLAN ChangZheng5, SSN-405.

Then, it will be on to finish the US Carrier Strike group including ,Trumpeter's USS Bunker Hill, CG-52, and the Los Angeles Class attack sumbmarine (which I have already completed), Testor's SSN-764, USS Boise (It was actaully the San Juan, but I built and marked it as the USS Boise), shown here:

Then Trumpeter's USS Iwo Jima LHD-7, Trumpeter's USS Freedom, LCS-1, Cyber Hobby's USS Independence, LCS-2, Hobby Boss's USS Texas, SSN-775. I already have completed Tamiya's 1/350 scale USS New Jersey battleship to the late 1980s upgrade and modernization (with the Tomohawks, Harpoons, CIWS, and SH-60 helos) as shown here:.

When a 1/350 scale USS Gerald R. Ford comes out from Trumpeter, Airfix, Tamiya, Dragon, or whomeever else, I will add it to this group along with another AEGIS Cruiser and Burke DDG.

Once the US and PLAN groups are built, I intend on building a complete Russian CSG (centered on Trumpeter's Kuznetsov) and a UK CSG centered on the HMS Queen Elizabeth if it is available, and if not then on Airfix's HMS Illustrious (which I have already purchased). That group will also include two Type 45 Daring Class Airfix models which come out in May and which I am on the advnced order list for, a Trafalgar SSN (which I already have) and an Astute SSN. The models are or will be available for me to do those CSGs after the PLAN and US ones are complete late this year.

Then, again, nce the models are available, I'd like to build a Japanese group centered on their new 22DDH carrier and the Hyuga, an Italian Group centered on the Cavour, a French Group centered on the De Gaulle, a Spanish Group centered on the Jaun Carlos, and ultimatly an Australian Group centered on the new Canberra. If they ever build the models, an Indian group centered on either the Vikramaditya or their new ADS Carrier the Vikrant would also be nice. You can see all of these carriers at my site:

All of these along with their escorts will be in 1/350 scale. Literally years worth of building.

Incredible work, Jeff. How do you plan to display this and your future models? Do you have shelving? The detail is extraordinary.

I do have shelving in my shop/area. We also have some out in the house too. This project will end up taking up all of it so we may have to add more. I'll let the boss decide what type of and where they might go in the house proper. LOL! You know what they say in my native, home state of Texas.

You are welcome my friend. Nexst I will build one of the Chinese new AEGIS-like estroyers, and then the old lady of the sea, the USS Enterprise, which will be another months long project.
