Looking for another rifle
Vanity | 03/22/2012 | Peter from Rutland

Posted on 03/22/2012 8:55:06 PM PDT by Peter from Rutland

I'm looking for another rifle. I want this one for if the fecal matter hits the oscillating unit, you know basic target shooting at the club, *cough*. Should be high caliber but not ridiculous. I don't want to spend ridiculous dollars for something that looks great but is inferior. It must be semi-auto, not one shot. I can't think of a better place to ask for opinions. Makers, calibers and model suggestions welcome.

Flies the Mitt flag [state of MA], with this statement.

“Mitt Romney raised by FID fee by 400%. But wait! Instead of a liftime FID I now have to renew it every four years for the rest of my life. A 400% increase every four years. Thanks Mitt!”

The same Mitt, who signed the MA assault weapons ban, and Peter wants what? and there is a Rutland MA

Due to recent invasion of insurgent swine on the ranch I was forced to update my equipment. This is a DPMS LR-308, very accurate and reliable, 24 inch bull barrel and target trigger (after market). Having carried it in the truck for over a year I've run into two problems, I should have went to the standard barrel due to weight and I switched to 10 round mags to make it easier to get in and out of the truck in a hurry (them hog's don't hand around long). It now has 57 hog's and 8 coyotes under it's belt. Photobucket

Yours is superior to mine because you can actually buy yours.

I wasn’t aware that there was another .50 cal semi-auto on the market.

It’s interesting that Barrett claims “As the first and only semi-automatic .50 caliber rifle available, the Model 82A1 continues to blaze new territory.”

223/5.56 for close in defense.
12 gauge slugs or 00 buckshot for home defense.
45 pistol for room defense."

I suggest a Taurus “Judge” snake pistol. It sends 6 copper disks and 15 BB’s at once. Shoots a 3” 410 load. Revolver will hold 5 rounds.

At a 20 foot range it will cut a cow in half! Great for a hall way defense position!

If you don’t have an AR get one. Several great choices.

For single shot long rifle: .308 Rem 700.
Shotgun: Rem 870

Both super reliable and the 700 you probably won’t find a more accurate long rifle off a production factory floor.

Palmetto Armory in Columbia, SC is selling finished AR’s in 5.56 for just about $700.00

Good choice, I own one and it's a nice rifle.

Another good choice for the SHTF / Home Defense is a Remington 870 Express. Can be easily modified to hold additional rounds and with its shorter 18.5" barrel is good for close(r) quarters defense while inflicting maximum damage. Easy to find for under $300 also.

Two different weapons for two different purposes, but then I'm a "right tool for the job" kinda guy. ;-)

The AR-15 .450 Bushmaster will drop anything that moves in front of it at a greater distance. Granted it’s 2-3x the price, but worth it. ;-)

Prefer my Browning bolt action .308 over a Remington 700, but that 700 is a nice rifle for the price.

Couldn't possibly agree more on the Remington 870 recommendation, adding only to buy the express version which can be modified to hold additional rounds. If one shops around, it's fairly easy to find the 870 for under $300 and used re-loading kits are also easy to find.

Just sayin' ...

BTW: in addition to the 870 for home defense, a good .45 or 9mm for close quarters is also in order. I prefer HnK handguns over everything else, but that's personal taste. I have large hands, need the large grips of the HnK's.

I’ve come to think of lever actions as the original assault rifles. You could do a lot worse.

Check out one of the FN FAL variants.

If you're looking at FN, the SCAR-H has been getting good reviews by the Special Ops community.

An SKS with a thirty round clip is deadly but its accuracy at longer ranges is lacking. At a 100 meters it will ruin you whole day.

Accuracy varies. A friend of mine had an SKS that was very accurate. I saw him shoot a 1 1/2 inch group at a hundred yards. Using iron sights. (Yes, he's a very good shot). A lot of the problem with AKs and SKSs comes from the crummy sights.

When the SHTF I would prefer the following. 308/7.62 for distance defense. 223/5.56 for close in defense.

Consider that a likely scenario is the "drive by shooting". 7.62 will penetrate car doors and damage engine blocks, while 5.56 will be much less effective.

Mosin Nagant - 7.62*54

Surplus between $65-100 depending on condition.

Sure, it's bolt action but cheap and expendable.

Enjoy the comparison!

Buy ammo.

Can't be overstated. If you are contemplating SHTF, then you should have at least a thousand rounds per gun, plus lots of mags. Having a dozen guns is useless if you run out of ammo.
