State health officials are warning those with a sweet tooth to steer clear of Vagabundo Paletas, a Mexican lollipop with high levels of lead.
The candy should be discarded immediately and pregnant women or children who have eaten it should consult their physician to see if testing is needed, said Ron Chapman, director of the California Department of Public Health.
Testing showed the lollipops contained as much as 0.61 parts per million of lead. That's six times more than the amount the state considers to be contaminated.
Vagabundo Paletas are sold in colorful plastic bags, with the candy name splashed across the top of the bag in yellow and red letters. The package features a happy cartoon character wearing purple pants, a red jacket and a purple hat. He's walking on railroad tracks, with a brown dog in tow, carrying a large red lollipop over his shoulder.

From now on I buy my lollipops only from China!
“Plomo o plata” will need to be rewritten “Plomo o azúcar”.
Does the government offer a "candy for Volt" car trade?
It’s probably a lot cheaper to cast the candy molds in lead and maybe the candy won’t stick in the mold.
Lead is not harmful. I worked in it and around it for 24 years I was a Lead Burner. It will not harm you aint that right Lee.
That is absolutely right Lee!
Since childhood, I could never get enough of my favorite candy: Atomic Fireballs. Went crazy some months back when reacquainted with them, and bought a bulk jar of them. Tasted like clay soaked in gasoline, and it probably was, because the stuff blistered my mouth and tongue. No flavor at all. Just pain, and a toxic chemical odor. The label said “Made in Mexico.” Threw the entire jar away.
lots of candy in mexico is has lead in it, been a problem for a lone time, the OC register had a series on the lean in candy about yrs ago so so
Shhh! This is all part of Obamacare. Racist!
/s (in case lead consumption has had an adverse impact)
Really?!? I’ve never, ever had that problem, and I’ve sucked down thousands of those. I particularly like how the heat starts right away, and then it cools down, and then the second layer of heat is hotter than the first. Anyway, I love ‘em, and get ‘em at Sam’s Club (when they’re stocked). Sorry for your troubles, AF are one of life’s great candy pleasures.
OMGoodness! Thanks for the memory! I loved AFs and had them all the time, but that was before I switched to low carb, and the AFs and a whole lotta other things went *poof* from my diet. I still love the heat and eat a lot of cayenne and other peppers.
Mmm, mmm, mmm... Madelaine cakes... Sigh...
