What does it look like when the world turns out all the lights? A glimpse will be offered today when millions of participants all over the globe -- from Egypt's Tahrir Square to Washington D.C.'s National Cathedral -- are expected to turn their lights off for an hour in honor of Earth Hour. Sydney's symbolic Opera House and Harbor Bridge were a couple of the first places to go dark, as Australians took part in the global effort to raise awareness over climate change and show the need for sustainability. The event takes place worldwide on Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. local time, during which time people are encouraged to turn off their lights for 60 minutes. ~snip
The organization holds the event annually on the last weekend in March because it's about "the time of the spring and fall equinoxes in the northern and southern hemispheres respectively. This allows for near coincidental sunset times in both hemispheres, thereby ensuring the greatest visual impact for a global 'lights out' event," says the WWF Web site. In the United States, five states are participating Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Montana and New Hampshire -- and almost 60 cities and towns not to mention many more landmarks, buildings, colleges, businesses, and organizations. The rest of the world is acting in a similar fashion. New Zealand got a two-hour head start of Australia, as lights were turned off at Sky Tower in Auckland and parliament buildings in Wellington. Several buildings along Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong participated, including the International Finance Centre, ... ~snip
Libya, Algeria, Bhutan and French Guinea. "Earth Hour 2012 is a celebration of people power," WWF official Dermot O'Gorman told reporters, including AP, hours before the event in Sydney. "(It's) the world's largest mass event in support of the planet."

“Earth Hour” was LAST YEARS’s Current Truth, this year’s current truth is LYNCHING a Hispanic Guy with a Jewish-sounding last name, so that blacks will be angered enough to show up and vote for OBAMA in 2006.
Besides, it might remind the sheeple of the outrageously expensive Obama failures like Solyndra, and THINK!.
As I've done for many years now, I turn off EVERY light in the house @9:00 pm. Because I go to bed.
I have 7 TVs all hooked up to Uverse. Four refrigerators/freezers, and 5 or 6 computers. I don’t know, I lost count. I got hammered in the garage workshop watching some NCAA basketball and texting my college friends. I don’t care. Yeah, I can burn the coal tonight. The moderators won’t let me say what I think of these enviro-nazis.
So, we’re all going to look like North Korea for an hour?
Lights going on in 3 minutes.
Just flipped on all of our lights. Screw Earth Hour.
I shaved $30 a month off my electric bill - by my own methods - and I will NEVER have a government 'screw-you' mercury bomb in my lights. I save money to save money, not because the greenies, who have more light bulbs in their kitchens that I have in my whole house dictate to us.
Tonight, my house, and friends and neighbors will be lit like Christmas trees - and put a one night lit-up spot on the map in our area.
Hey, that's what I do! Except mine are in the backyard of the house, where busy roads and airplane flight paths can see them better. Plus every light goes on in the house.
All lights on. Inside and out. Most of our neighborhood does every year. LOL!
Hasn’t Sun been great promoting Human Achievement Hour? Are you watching the fight tonight?
Utopian compliance winner, NK.
Same here. Every house is either normal brightness or even more lights on than usual.
Ditto here....all lights on, every room, every hallway....
My water heater is electric too. I think I'll run 50 or 60 gallons of hot water down the drain. The high usage might cost me a buck or too but it's well worth it.
What crap. Is this going to feed the children of Biafra?
I got my house glowing like a beacon.
Mine are going on until 9:30 Pacific so 4 hours of wonderful energy.
Pray for America
I will take a dump in a nearby creek, chase and run over squirrels, poison frogs, shoot eagles, torture ants, and skin my cat. Take that, Al Gore!
can you give me the link where you got that photo please?
I’m looking to buy land and then put a small cabin there where I can see the stars at night.
Here we can see stars quite good but I’m looking to get away from even a road for at least 10 miles
Gotta fire up the electric guitar too!!!
Here's my house! (Not really.)
>>Turn on your lights America.
Nah, I think I’ll just do a little arc-welding on my 4x4 instead.
Florida? Forgotten Coast or dead-center Everglades. Everywhere else has light pollution.
Just took a peek outside and guess what? My crazy libtard cross street neighbor took you up on your invite; her house is lit like a Christmas tree. Is this the day that Rush sends his plane coast to coast for no reason? Or is that another nutty made up observance day?
Celebration of light. Blazin away north of 49.
I just got back form a 20 minute drive around the neighborhood in my SUV. A few houses are dark, but not more than normal. Most houses have the same or more lights on.
We burnt an old 27” CRT TV.
In darkness there is no light.
Thanks for the reminder!! And...Let There Be Light!!
In honor of Thomas Edison and American achievement, I am turning on ALL the floodlights around my home.
Let it shine...
All the lights on in CDT. :) I feel so righteous!
Thanks for the reminder post. 8:30 on the nose I lit ‘er all up.
Well, I didn’t go all out as some of you. I just wanted to make sure the neighbors know I rebel against this crud - so 80-90% of the lights were on because they can see those lights.
And that’s all I care about - to help the satellite image and to push it in the face of my neighbors!
I’m betting that’s for (sneering childish mocking vocals..) Earth DAY.
You did good. I couldn’t do my outdoor lights because they are on a motion sensor and just went off after a few minutes. But the house was really lit up...tv on....steamer on....AC on.....
Every little bit that we can stick it to them makes me feel good! :)
Thanks for the reminder. I've turned up the natural gas heat four degrees, turned on the porch light and burning wood in the fireplace. If it helps warm up my area in the world, all the better for us!
An electron saved, is an electron earned! ;)
This whole Earth Hour thing is just STUPID. I bet if you counted in the costs of turning off, then turning power back on that it takes MORE energy to get things "warmed up" again.
It reminds me of when NBC turned off their lights during some football broadcast. Bob Costas and the other guys just sat there in the dim studio, looking like fools. Studio lights don't just come right back on, they take a long time to come back to their full brightness. Plus it wears out electrical devices faster when you keep doing this.
Instead they should get on their knees and pray.
Got the computer on (of course), microwave, clothes dryer, TV all going, and all the lights on, inside and out.
I’m commemorating by burning styrofoam and plastic Walmart carriers in the back yard.
Yes. That is the one...Earth day. It used to be Arbor day when I was a kid. These days the libs cannot be happy with simply planting a tree. Now we must save the earth.
Well, Earth Day is always April 22. Arbor Day varied, but looks like it’s mostly AROUND that time. Depends. Arbor Day has been around a long time. Hippies invented ED - gulp - basically at my birth. This goes along with the whole Kwanzaa invention. Geesh. The ‘60s sucked big rocks.
Did I miss that? Darn!
“It reminds me of when NBC turned off their lights during some football broadcast. Bob Costas and the other guys just sat there in the dim studio”
I almost forgot about that holier-than-thou moment.
Yet, they were all so upset this year when the lights went out on their own at that playoff game....
Was I supposed to observe something?
