Earth Hour observed all over the world. (I'm turning on every light)

What does it look like when the world turns out all the lights? A glimpse will be offered today when millions of participants all over the globe -- from Egypt's Tahrir Square to Washington D.C.'s National Cathedral -- are expected to turn their lights off for an hour in honor of Earth Hour. Sydney's symbolic Opera House and Harbor Bridge were a couple of the first places to go dark, as Australians took part in the global effort to raise awareness over climate change and show the need for sustainability. The event takes place worldwide on Saturday from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. local time, during which time people are encouraged to turn off their lights for 60 minutes. ~snip

The organization holds the event annually on the last weekend in March because it's about "the time of the spring and fall equinoxes in the northern and southern hemispheres respectively. This allows for near coincidental sunset times in both hemispheres, thereby ensuring the greatest visual impact for a global 'lights out' event," says the WWF Web site. In the United States, five states are participating — Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Montana and New Hampshire -- and almost 60 cities and towns not to mention many more landmarks, buildings, colleges, businesses, and organizations. The rest of the world is acting in a similar fashion. New Zealand got a two-hour head start of Australia, as lights were turned off at Sky Tower in Auckland and parliament buildings in Wellington. Several buildings along Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong participated, including the International Finance Centre, ... ~snip

Libya, Algeria, Bhutan and French Guinea. "Earth Hour 2012 is a celebration of people power," WWF official Dermot O'Gorman told reporters, including AP, hours before the event in Sydney. "(It's) the world's largest mass event in support of the planet."

Well, I didn’t go all out as some of you. I just wanted to make sure the neighbors know I rebel against this crud - so 80-90% of the lights were on because they can see those lights.

And that’s all I care about - to help the satellite image and to push it in the face of my neighbors!

You did good. I couldn’t do my outdoor lights because they are on a motion sensor and just went off after a few minutes. But the house was really lit up...tv on....steamer on....AC on.....

Every little bit that we can stick it to them makes me feel good! :)

I'm turning on EVERY light in the house @ 8:30 tonight. And doing a load of laundry.

Thanks for the reminder. I've turned up the natural gas heat four degrees, turned on the porch light and burning wood in the fireplace. If it helps warm up my area in the world, all the better for us!

Hmmm...according to your US map, that one guy in North Dakota is REALLY doing his part to light up the sky.

This whole Earth Hour thing is just STUPID. I bet if you counted in the costs of turning off, then turning power back on that it takes MORE energy to get things "warmed up" again.

It reminds me of when NBC turned off their lights during some football broadcast. Bob Costas and the other guys just sat there in the dim studio, looking like fools. Studio lights don't just come right back on, they take a long time to come back to their full brightness. Plus it wears out electrical devices faster when you keep doing this.

Instead they should get on their knees and pray.

Got the computer on (of course), microwave, clothes dryer, TV all going, and all the lights on, inside and out.

Yes. That is the one...Earth day. It used to be Arbor day when I was a kid. These days the libs cannot be happy with simply planting a tree. Now we must save the earth.

Well, Earth Day is always April 22. Arbor Day varied, but looks like it’s mostly AROUND that time. Depends. Arbor Day has been around a long time. Hippies invented ED - gulp - basically at my birth. This goes along with the whole Kwanzaa invention. Geesh. The ‘60s sucked big rocks.

“It reminds me of when NBC turned off their lights during some football broadcast. Bob Costas and the other guys just sat there in the dim studio”

I almost forgot about that holier-than-thou moment.

Yet, they were all so upset this year when the lights went out on their own at that playoff game....
