Yeah.
Kind of a slow thread. Too bad it didn’t have any salacious elements in it to spark discussions.

Mostly we’ve been speculating on how two double-cheeseburgers from a one-dollar menu could cost $2.75. It’s a higher mathematics thread.

two double cheeseburgers from the dollar menu = $2.75? That’s easy: TAX!

Tax is quite possible, Professor LibreOuMort, but may I propose another possibility?
Perhaps two years ago, our local McDonald's dropped the cheese from the Dollar Menu McDoubles and started to charge extra if you ordered cheese. That phase continued for six to eight months then disappeared.
Although this incident occurred in March of this year, perhaps this franchisee is still charging for cheese.
And tax.
Higher math.

OK - tax-chick, I stand corrected.
But that still leaves the question: “Why is it called the dollar menu when items on it are more than a dollar?”

It’s not higher math, it’s Obamath. He hopes you can’t figure out where your money went.

Simple. The sign doesn’t say “One” Dollar. Could be “two dollar, three dollar”. The name of the sign may be technically true but misleading. Sort of like your average conversation with a Clinton.

But that still leaves the question: Why is it called the dollar menu when items on it are more than a dollar?Technically, there weren't any items on it that were more than a dollar throughout the Great Cheese Disruption. McDonald's changed the name of the product when they dropped cheese as an ingredient, but kept the $1 price.
In detail:
It was a "Double Cheeseburger" when it cost $1 and was on the Dollar Menu.
Then they removed cheese, called it a "McDouble," and charged you $1 for a double hamburger. After the first time you ordered it and said "hey, this doesn't have cheese!", you found out you now had to ask and pay extra for cheese. I'm betting that's how we ended up with a $2.75 charge in this story - tax plus an extra charge for cheese.
In my neck of the woods, they're still called "McDoubles" but they quietly put the cheese back on them at the $1 price just six or eight months after the Great Cheese Disruption. In this story, I think the franchisee (in Manatee County, Florida) still charges for cheese.
Or it was smoke and mirrors. And tax. And shipping and handling.
