Creepy 70's Movie

Posted on 04/12/2012 4:05:32 PM PDT by MNDude

There's this CREEPY movie that I've been trying to know the name of for many years. I remember watching it when I was a kid. Here's what I remember:

There's some divers underwater, looking for a treasure or something. A bunch of rocks falls on them because there was a curse on the treasure or something?

They bring up some kind of King Tut sarcophagus onto their boat, and someone warns them that it is son of Satan.

(here's the creepy part) Then the sarcophagus starts breathing and you can see it's gold chest go in and out as it makes scary breathing sounds.

Then my babysitter sent me to bed, so I never got to find out what happened or even what movie that was. Does anyone here know?

Anyone remember this movie?

It was black and white(IIRC), and there were some people towards the end, (IIRC) walking into this place, but they didn’t realize the “carpet” was a cat’s tongue.

It was on tv in the eighties..I let my daughter and a neighbor kid watch it..The neighbor child had nightmares for months...oops.

I’ve seen cartoons with the “kit kat Klub” red carpet going into a cat’s mouth, but this wasn’t a cartoon, but an actual movie with human actors.

Hostage Flight- with an original ending deemed so horrible, they changed it for later viewings

I used to love the old trailers/previews for movies when they'd have some spiel like..This movie is so scary audience members must sign a waiver that if they die of fright during the movie, the theater will not be held responsible.

That seems like the good old days now that I think about it.

Of course the best of the lot was the pilot movie for The Night Stalker.

And of course, you should remember Duel starring Dennis Weaver and an old Peterbilt truck?

What happened next? A country lost a war because their submarines were built from styrofoam...

No, wait a minute. That was a dream. My babysitter sent me to bed, too!

Is that the one that ends with the big "The End" in scary letters that turns into a question mark?

"Odd that on YouTube it doesn’t seem quite as terrifying as i remembered it."

Pretty much always the case, isn't it? We see some movie at 4, 5, or 6 years old and it scares the bejeezus out of us.

You watch it years later as an adult and literally LOL at the creative if awkward uses for foam rubber, blood that looks like Heinz tomato sauce, plastic severed limbs (probably lifted from mannequins), and the worst imaginable examples of "acting", directing, and cinematography.

IOW.....they sucked.

Great movie. I saw it on TV when I was about 12 when my dad was driving an old Brockway for a living. Creeped the hell out of me.

Bought it on disc last year. The best thing is you never see the evil truck driver.

...and in this digital age, we ALL know the new haven for uber-cheesey, pseudo-sci-fi flicks made with an average budget of a buck and a quarter:

They never do. When I was a kid I saw the 1953 movie "Invaders From Mars" on TV, and was terrified by it. Had recurring dreams. When VCR's came out, I got it on VHS, watched it, and couldn't understand why it had bothered me so much.

One of my favorites was the 1967 film “It!” starring Roddy McDowell.

"Sounds like an old ABC made for TV movie..."

There were a lot of made-for-TV horror flicks produced in the 70's and 80's. Wish they'd get around to releasing them on DVD sometime before I die.

Oh yeah - the original Invaders from Mars. I saw that on tv also and I was freaked out for ages. I think it was because of the ending when the kid wakes up, having dreamed it all, only to have the same UFO land in the sand pit, just like the dream. Brrrr.

The Crawling Eye was another. And Rodan for some reason. And the one where the head of the girlfriend is kept alive in the lab after the bad car accident. I’ll stop now, because I could go on....and on.

“Sounds like Mary Poppins to me.”

This trailer makes Mary Poppins look a LOT scarier than a breathing sarcophagus:
