Local Mom Who Prefers Smirnoff to Smurfs Gets Jail Time
SF Weekly ^ | Wed., Apr. 11 2012 | Erin Sherbert

Sarah Boushey, the vodka-chugging, Smurf-hating mother, was sentenced to 69 days in San Mateo county jail after the Smurfs movie drove her to drink and drive with her 4-year-old daughter in the car.

According to the San Mateo County DA, mom, who pleaded no contest to driving drunk with a minor in the car, has already served 47 days behind bars. Boushey will also have to install an anti-DUI device in her car and use it for the three years she is on probation.

Readers probably recall the incident last August where 42-year-old Boushey took her young daughter to see The Smurfs in Daly City, where she pounded a half-bottle of vodka. As they left the theater, she sideswiped a few cars before crashing into a median.

When police arrived, she couldn't even remember her name.

Her daughter, who perhaps was used to seeing mommy behave this way, spoke up for an inebriated Boushey, giving the cops her mother's name and bluntly explaining that "she's drunk."

Police, who found a half-empty bottle of vodka in her purse, claim Boushey had a blood alcohol content of .35 -- more than three times the legal limit.

"I'm not a big fan of The Smurfs, but not enough to drink like that," District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe told SF Weekly after charging Boushey last summer.

If they really wanted to punish Boushey, they'd make her watch this in jail:

Maybe I’m just a wuss but I have a hard time chugging vodka. Am I the only one here with that problem?

Now, I'm not a vodka fan (since college, anyway) and I'm no way going to excuse getting drunk a) with a child in my care, or b) and then driving.

Nevertheless, "half-a-bottle" depends on what kind of bottle. She had it in her purse. Assuming it wasn't one of these monstrosities that doubles as a shopping bag, it was probably a pint bottle (8oz), meaning half of it was 4 ounces. Over the course of a 2-hour period (movie plus-or-minus shorts and ads), she was consuming the equivalant of two "doubles" in two hours.

That's a lot, granted, and it explains her BAC.

But let's not get TOO carried away with the hyperbole. It's not like she was sitting around the theatre with a fifth and knocking it back.

I think.... :)

When it was all I had on a Saturday night, in college, I could do it.

Other than that, hell no. Like drinking rubbing alcohol after the first swig.

D-uh. "Half-pint", not pint. Pint is 16 oz.

If she had a pint bottle, all bets are off.

Could be either the pint or the half-pint, depending on her size, her tolerance to alcohol, etc.

I think it tastes nasty. Too medicinal.

Probably right... likely she walked into the place with half a 'pocket mickey' (200ml) in her purse - the gals love'm because they fit so nicely in their big bags these days.

A standard mixed drink has about 1.5 ounces of booze, but taking a swig of vodka out of a bottle can result in a lot more alcohol than a mixed cocktail provides - getting you drunk much faster.

Of course, it all depends on whether it is drank faster than your system can eliminate the alcohol, how young you are, how much you've eaten lately, and how fast your body can metabolize alcohol.

I didn't see Avatar, but I was told it was less intellectual than the smurfs.

“Assuming it wasn’t one of these monstrosities that doubles as a shopping bag...”

Good thing I’m too mature *cough* for my mommy & daddy to take me to a kiddie movie. Mom has a dedicated going-to-the-movies purse. Light on all the incidental stuff we womenfolk tend to accumulate during daily carry, it can hold two canned sodas, two drive-thru burgers and fries. No wasting half a paycheck at the box office for those two on date night!

Really good Vodka. Put it in the freezer till it gets this thick, soupy consistency, then pour into a shot glass, neat. I'm not a big fan of flavored vodka, but Ciroc coconut like this is awesome!! Great dessert.

Now, that doesn't mean drinking more than one or two shots and certainly NOT while driving!!
