Star Trek Convention Heads for London with All Five Captains on Board

STAR TREK brings life Jim, but not as we know it, to London this October in the form of a convention featuring all five captains – including 81-year-old William Shatner - of the long-running TV series, the first time the quintet has appeared on stage together.

Destination Star Trek London, as the live event is to be known, boldly goes to the Excel exhibition centre between the 19 and 21 October and is the first Star Trek convention in London for ten years. Its website launches today.

"We are going to make this really interactive," said Rob Nathan, one of the show’s organisers.

"There are going to be stunt displays, we are going to recreate some sets and get some original sets. People will be able to sit on the Starship bridge with members of the cast.

"It's going to be an absolute pilgrimage for Star Trek fans."

Up to 15,000 Star Trek fans are expected to beam down to Destination Star Trek, which will feature plenty of other cast members from the five series, as well as the captains.

"The Star Trek fan base in the UK is one of the biggest in the world, and it has waited a long time for the convention to return, so we wanted to make sure we did it right," said Liz Kalodner of CBS Consumer Products, which owns the Star Trek TV franchise.

Those five captains are:

William Shatner, Captain Kirk in the original series starting back in 1966; English skipper Sir Patrick Stewart, who played Captain Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation from 1987–94; Avery Brooks, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Commander Sisko between 1993 and 1999; Kate Mulgrew, Captain Janeway in Star Trek: Voyager from 1995 to 2001 and Scott Bakula, Captain Archer in Star Trek: Enterprise from 2001 to 05.

Tickets for Destination Star Trek London go on sale on 30 April.

I liked Enterprise best out of all of them, too. Most of my family agreed. It was grittier and more dangerous. We were very disappointed with its early demise.

Is it this one called ‘ The Captain’s Summit’, which is narrated by Whoopie Goldberg?

NO!
God forbid no!
I mean this one:

This was a movie that Shatner made himself.
I like his interview style. I became a bigger fan of the Shat after his great interview with Rush a few years ago.

You are correct; “The Cage” never actually aired in its entirety in the series. It was rejected by the studio as “too cerebral”, but it impressed them enough that they gave the unprecedented order to make a second pilot, which won them over.

Circa 1988 there was a restored version of “The Cage” (assembled from “The Menagerie” and Gene Roddenberry’s black-and-white copy of the pilot) released on tape; sometime in the 1990s a complete color copy of “The Cage” was reportedly discovered in a Paramount film vault and aired as a TV special.

“We were very disappointed with its early demise.”

I blame the theme music. Pathetic.

It was a two-part episode and I called my sister and said, “whatever happens in the rest of the world or in my life, I WILL be in front of my television for Part II next week.”

LOL!

I remember my sister and I had alternating days where we could pick 1 hour of what we wanted to watch.

Of course HER day was the one Star Trek premiered on, so I traded my entire week just to have that one day.

In the tradition of big sisterhood, she tried to renege on the deal just as the show was about to start. I launched myself across the living room and proceeded to do my best to wipe that smug look off her face with the living room floor. [Thank goodness Mom was in the next room and heard the whole thing.]

After that, our 'choosing' days got switched, and I never missed an episode!

Gene Roddenberry gave lecture tours in the mid 1970s showing this episode. That's where I saw it.
