Amanda Clayton, who admitted to receiving public food assistance after winning $1 million in the state lotto, was arrested Monday evening in Michigan on two felony counts of welfare fraud. Clayton, of Lincoln Park, Mich., failed to report her winnings and employment while receiving $5,475 in food and medical assistance, the state Attorney General said.
"It's simply common sense that million dollar lottery winners forfeit their right to public assistance," Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette said in a statement. "We will continue to work with local, state and federal authorities to uphold state laws intended to ensure wise stewardship of taxpayer dollars."
Michigan public assistance programs require participants to report income and employment
Clayton, 25, was cut off from state food aid last month following a report in which she acknowledged to WDIV-TV that she was continuing to get $200 in monthly food aid, given by the state through a "Bridge Card." Clayton won $1 million on Sept. 12 in the "Make Me Rich!" game show, sponsored by the Michigan lottery.

I wonder if she donated to Obama?
Can we find out?
Michigan....the epitome of wise stewardship of taxpayer dollars.
I'll bet tons of folks don't know that's a crime.
I suspect it would be hard considering the many thousands of anonymous prepaid cash debit cards that sent donations to Zero from overseas.
A $1 million dollar fine should suffice.
Not going good for her. At her arraignment, she asked the judge to appoint her a public defender. LOL
Karma!
Not trying to mount a defense of this by any means, but is this one of those things where they pay out over 20 years and take half of it or so in taxes? Or is it a lump sum after taxes?
500k over 20 years is a lot different divided out.
Again not defending, but it changes the context of things.
The lottery winner who sparked outrage for still collecting food stamps after winning $1 million has been arrested and now faces up to four years in jail. Amanda Clayton, 24, previously told reporters that she “was struggling” and needed the extra assistance.
“I feel it’s okay [to receive welfare] because I mean, I have no income and I have bills to pay. I have two houses,” Clayton told WDIV news in March. At the time, lottery and government officials were investigating her claims as a result of an anonymous tip alleging she was falsely receiving welfare.
“I thought they would cut me off, but since they didn’t, I thought maybe it was okay because I’m not working,” Clayton said. She attempted to defend her actions, though and has said that she will continue claiming her benefits until she is cut off.

She took the lump sum. Comes out to about $375,000 after taxes and everything. Not a bad chunk of change......she thinks that’s just walking around cash.
On the other hand, she can buy houses in Detroit for $500, so if she has TWO, it doesn't set her back that much.
However we have allowed welfare to become a permanent situation, fostering a "gimme" culture in which entire generations of layabouts get to sit at home and watch television all day while the rest of us suckers get up at 5am each morning (which is why I'm posting this at this hour) to work out butts off so that we can pay our taxes to keep these bums on their couches munching Doritos while they watch Sally Jesse Raphael or those other clucking hens that show up on daytime TV.
Used to be that nothing was on TV in the daytime but cartoons and children's shows because adults were either working or busy keeping house. Those on welfare don't even bother keeping house - they watch the TV while their kids hang out on the street corners getting hooked on drugs and looking for trouble. Don't believe me, go take a drive through any urban neighborhood and see for yourself.
In the original New York lottery, the $1,000,000 prize was $50,000/per year for 20 years or $500k one-time payment. $375k is 75% of $500k, so she is probably enjoying Buffet-Rule tax rates, or she is taking advantage of income averaging.
BTW, in New York, welfare payments were technically considered a loan, and when the first welfare recipients began to cash lottery tickets, the state claimed the proceeds. I suppose "the people" agitated to get that kind of cruel and oppressive law off the books. It was a different country in those days.
That's how the democrat, socialist, marxist, fascist, communist, liberal establishment in America designed it.
It was also my understanding that the way they designed it is so that neither the value of the house you live in or the car you drive or the money you have in savings counts toward determination of your poverty status.
That the determination of your eligibility for welfare assistance is based purely on your work income or lack thereof. Is that correct or not? Or is that just federal guidelines and each state has their own laws in regard to welfare abuse ? And I’m sure federal welfare monies are mixed in with state funding, so how is she breaking the law?
I swear I’ve heard John Stossel say that over and over.
If she is not working she could have a million dollars in assets and still be able to get food stamps.
Thread Winner.
Amanda Clayton... failed to report her winnings and employment while receiving $5,475 in food and medical assistance...Votes for Obama whether she's incarcerated or not.
