Is anyone watching "Who do you think you are?" on NBC with Reba? (BARF!)
NBC Television ^ | 4/20/2012 | TSgt

Posted on 04/20/2012 5:35:02 PM PDT by TSgt

I walked in the room and my wife has it on.

Reba just found out her 4th generation grandfather owned slaves and now she feels like a horrible human.

The historian just said, "We white people must understand that we have a connection to slavery so we all can heal."

I gagged.

What if our white ancestors were slaves, double indentured servants to serve 14 years for passage of the Atlantic on ships under crowded conditions.

Islamic slavery is going on TODAY supported by
the UN, EU, and US State Dept. (which also
loves women as chattel).

Is that covered? How about the thousand
slaves taken by Islam ... tonight?

Well Reba, if you really feel that way the why don't you just go ahead and contribute your $300 million towards "reparations". It's the least you can do, and will start you down the path towards being a good person again right? /s

My 4th, 5th and 6th great-grandfathers owned slaves, took them along when they moved from VA to KY to MO. I’m actually proud of their accomplishments. Reba is an idiot.

Not guilty. My four-greats grandfather owned a slave in what is now Stephens City, VA two centuries ago. I should say, he had at least one slave - he freed one in his will, probated in 1835. His grandson, my Great-great grandfather, served with the 1st Virginia Light Artillery in the Civil War.

I bear absolutely no responsibility to the descendants of slaves other than to treat them with the respect and dignity to which all God's children are entitled.

Enough of this self-serving PC self-mortification by the chattering class and Hollywood glitterati!

Nos genuflectitur ad non princeps sed Princeps Pacem!

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

Here's a fun fact: Most slave owners took out life insurance policies on their slaves. Now would any insurance company issue a policy if there was one iota of doubt as to the treatment of the slave?

I have a connection with slaves too. My ancestors mostly fought on the Union side and had their blood shed during the War of Northern Aggression. It was during that war that Lincoln ordered the slaves freed, but only in areas under control of the Confederacy, except the Parishes of St. Bernard, Plaquemines, Jefferson, St. John, St. Charles, St. James Ascension, Assumption, Terrebonne, Lafourche, St. Mary, St. Martin, and Orleans, including the City of New Orleans. [1]

My paternal grandfather had a farm near a small town settled by freed slaves and he often hired them for farm work when he could have hired others. My impression was that he and my grandmother helped them as much as he could.

Does this history that I was never personally involved in, except through the genes that I had no options to accept or reject, make me somehow better than anyone else, or worse for that matter? Certainly not.

How many years ago did we lose the common sense that people are not responsible for the circumstances of their own conception, nor for what their family members did before that moment? Life is to be lived looking forward, with only a glancing look back so as to not repeat the mistakes of others.

Good for you! We have two big flat screens in two rooms of our house, and that’s about two too many. Husband has a t.v. habit; insists on watching the news and weather before he goes to sleep. We live in tornado country, so I suppose keeping an eye on the weather forecast isn’t a bad thing, but we hear all the bad news of the world several times a day.

I keep the t.v. off most of the time; and wish I could get the rest of it under control. He’s sorta hard of hearing, so I can’t get away from it too easily. I keep earplugs handy, and that helps some. I’m convinced that one could go six months at a time not hearing all the clamor and clanging and still be better off.

I didn’t find anything offensive about that episode. It was actually one of the better ones; Reba was very open with how she felt about her family history and I found the whole thing very moving.

Why are we so quick to find offense in everything?

I only know this because my wife still watches network garbage: The amount of gay couples portrayed on sitcoms is disgusting. I get it. It's part of real life but it's so obvious they make SURE there's a token gay couple in every show. Then, there is the standard dumb Republican insult that get's thrown into the script.

I just walk in on this stuff..and I see this much. You made the right choice.

My, I think 10th great grandfather came in the 1620’s at age 15 with no family as an indentured servant. Twenty years later he's listed as a councilman, tavern owner, and when he passed away left large parcels of land to each child.

Slavery has probably been around since the time of Nimrod. It exists today... Not only in its metaphysical form in the United States where many are enslaved to the entitlement culture, but also in actual form in Africa (Sudan, and other areas). Yes, it has been an unfortunate practice in the history of man, which fortunately is not as prevalent as it once was, but to dwell on the past, and hold grievances for things that happened years ago ( and generations ago,) is cancerous.
If someone wants to begrudge the fact that someone in their ancestral tree was a slave, they should start first with the actual men-stealers - in the case of the hyphenated Americans who ancestors were slaves that came from Africa, that would be other African tribes. And perhaps be miffed at your ancestor's tribes that allowed themselves to be so weak to be taken as slaves... If they wanted to take a dispassionate look at the matter, they should be thankful that there were 'customers' that were willing to save them from the grave - which their captors would have otherwise buried them in if there were no 'customers'.

I learned in my 40s that some of my ancestors owned slaves in Alabama.

I didn't do it. I don't even know the names of these ancestors. I didn't abuse or use anybody. I have no guilt for things I did not do.

I also did not indulge in fantasies about mansions with white pillars, about fancy dresses, and being waited upon by faithful house slaves. Slavery was and is an abomination.
