Man Arrested in Attack on Stray Puppy

Dog died after it was doused in lighter fluid, set on fire

Dallas police said Friday night that an 18-year-old wanted in an attack on a puppy that died after it was doused in lighter fluid and set on fire had turned himself in.

News of the arrest came while several hundred North Texans were gathered for a candlelight vigil in memory of the dog, Justice. The master of ceremonies returned to the stage to announce the arrest, and the crowd erupted in cheers.

Justice was burned alive April 2. Dallas police had issued a warrant for the arrest of 18-year-old Darius Ewing. He surrendered to police Friday night.

The dog died Sunday of complications from the third-degree burns that covered 70 percent of his body.

Witnesses told police Ewing doused the dog in lighter fluid and then threw a lit cigarette on him.

The Dallas County district attorney’s office said it was thrilled to announce the arrest during the vigil for Justice.

“The timing was great,” said David Alex, a special prosecutor in the district attorney's office. “Hopefully, a lot of it had to do with the pressure from the community to do the right thing."

Animal cruelty is a felony. If convicted, Ewing faces two to 10 years in prison.

Exactly. These savages in the inner cities do this all of the time and a “jury of their peers” for some reason never convicts. Wonder why!

Stories like this make me cry. Then I get angry. It is a good thing that my .45 and I are not alone in a room with the inhuman monsters who would do this to any creature, let alone such a sweet and trusting puppy.

The vet in the video said that Justice had a good prognosis, but I guess that third-degree burns are just too much for a dog this young.

I hope that every laughing creep who participated in this heinous crime gets at least some jail time, and that the perp gets the maximum sentence.

“Does someone claim all dogs that are killed are done some by police officers?”

No one on FR has claimed “all dogs that are killed are [killed] by police officers.”

Pre-emptive nonsense is still nonsense, and engaging in it reflects on you, not other posters.

I am so sorry your Ibizan was abused. I’m sure she shows her gratitude to you each day, though, for getting her out of such a horrible situation.

Sadly, the poor dog leeched onto me for dear life from the second I got her.

Only as she’s getting near The Bridge has she accepted “dad’s” affection and pats.

I’m her ‘safe spot’ and when I have to leave the house, she gets pretty upset.

It’s been a long 9 years.

But then, she’ll have a good day and rub her head against my leg and ‘chuckle’.
[she really is laughing]

How can you not love that?

Poor Pookie.

She deserved better.

She’s *such* a good dog.

To add insult to injury, her beloved sister Phoebe passed away last month from multiple health issues related to her immune system.

She really, -really- loved Phoebe.

Gypsy, bless her crazy little heart, has started to love up to Pookie and try and engage her in crazy-play.

Pookie’s old body is really not up to it so she just wags her tail and barks happily at Gypsy as she runs circles around her.

Sometimes I feel like such a failure.

I want to make their lives perfect but never seem to get all the way there.

I imagine that if she could speak English, she would say the only way to make it more perfect would be: more bacon.

Sounds like a cheeseburger is in order to right all the suffering she has experienced in her house.

And, oh dear, she doesn’t remember if she ate a cheeseburger or not; you’ll have to make her another one——

;-)

She just had her Taste Of the Wild High Prairie and is wrapped in her blankie and sacked out on the baby mattress she has for a bed.
[she can’t get up on the sofa anymore and she’s too heavy to keep lifting]
Gypsy is sleeping beside of her.

Tomorrow morning I’ll give her some cheese along with her breakfast milk.

Your post reminds me of my friend. She has a varying number of Goldens (her own and rescues that she fosters)...sometimes up to 8 or 9 at a time.

Anyway, whenever any member of the “pack” is celebrating a birthday she loads them all up in the MINIVAN for a trip to McDonald’s...cheeseburgers “plain” for the group...LOL!

Honestly, it must look like a clown car in there.

... no cops were involved in the death of the dog.

Are you suggesting that this fact makes the story newsworthy?

Good Lord man, there's only so much room in the JEEP! Although I really DO like Bruce Dickinson...

Maybe we should call him to see if the 747 is free??
