Word For The Day, Monday, 4.23.12
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
: a dispute or exchange of personal abuse in verse form
Etymology: (Scots: "quarreling," or "contention"), poetic competition of the Scottish makaris (poets) of the 15th and 16th centuries, in which two highly skilled rivals engaged in a contest of verbal abuse, remarkable for its fierceness and extravagance. Although contestants attacked each other spiritedly, they actually had a professional respect for their rival's vocabulary of invective. The tradition seems to have derived from the Gaelic filid (class of professional poets), who composed savage tirades against persons who slighted them. A Scandinavian counterpart is the Lokasenna ("Flyting of Loki"), a poem in the Poetic (Elder) Edda in which the trickster-god Loki bandies words with the other gods, taunting them with coarse jests. Although true flyting became obsolete in Scottish literature after the Middle Ages, the tradition itself never died out among writers of Celtic background. The style and language of Robert Burns's "To a Louse" ("Ye ugly, creepin, blastit wonner / Detested, shunn'd by saunt an' sinner") parodies earlier Scots flyting, and James Joyce's poem "The Holy Office" is a bard's curse on the society that spurns him.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Here is my example with WFTD.
I'm thinking this class has some creative flyters...

It’s about time
You opened this class
what biting wit
from an ostensibly soothing twit
Obama works to get the races fighting
But weapons theyre for the birds
Better by far to use your words
Insult the guy for wearing a hoodie
Yeah, thats the ticket, thats a goodie
What this country needs is just a flyting.
kind of like a white guy’s RAP-OFF! A+++
Inviting a poem?
You know you chose wrong
If writing a “brief”
What’s taking so long?
briefs are hard.
Pimple scum and worthless tool
In House of White ye may reside
But expelled ye'll be by November tide
Ye ne'er deserves a flyting verse
But upon yer arse I place this curse
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!! A+++++++
If you’ve ever watched Parliament in action, they excel in flyting. As for the social networks, Twitter has a war going on between John Podhoretz and Jim Treacher that is extra snarky.
Your Recipe for Drosophila
Is similar to slake
The thirst of vegans who at Starbucks
Find Beetles in their shake.
The left is deserving of flyting
In words both explicit and biting
Our freedoms, they’re taking
These socialists, making
A Civil War II worth the fighting
Ok, can you brew us up one one of those for show and tell?
A+++ if you produce one ; )
i guess if you stick it in your political opponent’s eye, maybe? ; ) A++
A+++ i think they should settle it in a DANCE OFF!
