Firefox 12 released

Mozilla has now finalised the next version of their popular internet browser, Firefox 12 and is ready to download, although as of yet it hasn't been officially publicised. Overall, there isn't a huge amount of noticeable differences from the previous release but it is still recommended you update to the latest version.

For those eager to get their hands on the next version, you can download it from Mozilla's website. For the moment, you can also download other languages versions of the browser here. You can also view the release notes of Firefox 12 here, with the browser version being officially released on the 24th of April.

For those curious to see what's changed from version 11, which was released less than six weeks ago, here's what's new:

Just in case there are those still using Windows 2000, Windows XP RTM or XP Service Pack 1, Firefox 12 will be the last version of the browser from Mozilla to officially support those operating systems. Windows XP SP2 and above will only be supported in the next version of Firefox.

I had similar PDF problems with an earlier version of FF. The next major upgrade seemed to correct it.

11 has crashed several times.

12 installed yesterday — with a big notice that it didn’t know where this new version came from. [Even Mozilla can’t keep up with its own revsions.]

11 and 12 have problems with Javascript on some sites. Either Java or Mozilla is the problem.

[Upgrades — no matter what they fix, they also break something else.]

Foxit PDF reader/editor works great and is way leaner than acrobat.

Bloatware? My IE9 is using 18MB right now. How much is your Firefox using?

I got that note as well. On Mozilla-”The version of Firefox you are using is unknown. Download new version here.” Yet I already had downloaded FF 12. Sure they will get it corrected via update.

Too much (177MB), but until I upgrade from XP with a new computer and Windows 7, I can't use IE9 even if I wanted to as IE9 will not work on XP.

No kidding. One or two upgrades ago, the bookmarking feature in FF changed from being simple and intuitive, to being WTF?

You used to be able to click on 'bookmarks menu', and all of your bookmark folders would display. From there, it was a simple matter to choose which folder to save the new bookmark in - but no more. Now, you get a choice of maybe five recent folders you've used, and that's it.

What really pisses me off, is that someone had to work to degrade that simple and useful feature. Had they simply left it alone, it would have been superior to what they have now.

All three of these are are good additions IMO.

I still think it's a point release, not a major version.

Here's what I see when I try to bookmark...

When I select the 2nd down arrow (circled in red below) you see more...

Is that what you meant?

I’ve heard good things about FoxIt and will have to look into it more.

I don’t know what just happened, but after looking at your screen shots, I played around with my bookmarking tool, and voila...it’s now operating just like yours.

I’m glad to have it working like it used to, but it’s still irritating that I had to go to so much effort to sort out a function that used to be so simple.

Thanks for doing whatever you did! LOL

because it's the last FF version to support the ancient Java version required by some of my old Cisco security devices' firmware.

Me too. It really messed me up when FF decided to block the old Java plugin as unsafe. They said it could be used and unblocked for those who know and accept the risks...but I never did find a way to do that. Had to uninstall all Java...reinstall the plugin, then select "unblock" in the plugin config.

Any install of any newer Java breaks it. So, naturally, many other apps now don't work.

I’m using FF9, and that’s as far as I plan to go. I have the executables for 3.6, I’m tempted to reinstall it and forget all this 9, 10, 12 garbage.

I'd suggest you not. If you're using FF-9 you are most of the way there as the newest version (FF-12 released today) will assume all your add-ons work so if they are working in FF-9 they will work in FF-12.

My problem is that the upgrade from 3.6 to a more recent version of FF will take out my entire screen arrangement and break links for any add-ons not supported by a later version (and I have a few). Also on the downside, today, April 24, is the last day FF will support v.3.6. Any security breaches after today will not be addressed so that version (and earlier) can be hacked.

The next version, FF-13, due out in June will drop versions of Windows earlier than XP with service pack 2. So its a mixed bag, but I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and upgrade in the next few days.

I upgraded to FF 12.0 4/24. OSX Snow Leopard up to date.

My son sent me to a youtube link and I can’t open it. Tells me I need a plugin and to search.
When I search it tells me there are no applicable plugins.

On checking several youtube videos I get the same result.
Some play, some don’t.
Can’t figure out what’s happening.
