Giant Cannibal Shrimp More Than A FOOT Long Invade Waters Off Gulf Coast
Daily Mail Online ^ | 4/26/12 | Daily Mail Reporter

A big increase in reports of Asian tiger shrimp along the U.S. Southeast coast and in the Gulf of Mexico has federal biologists worried the species is encroaching on native species' territory.

The shrimp are known to eat their smaller cousins, and sightings of the massive crustaceans have gone up tenfold in the last year, biologists say.

The black-and-white-striped shrimp can grow 13 inches long and weigh a quarter-pound, compared to eight inches and a bit over an ounce for domestic white, brown and pink shrimp.

They are very good and eaten all over Southeast Asia. Steamed with butter to dip them in is excellent. A couple of curry dishes are the ticket if you like hot. They seem to catch all different varieties of shrimp as well as “farmed” shrimp. Fish sauce is made from fermented shrimp but I don’t know the size.

Shrimp are sold based on how many to the pound. I've had 20’s, 10’s and even 8’s, but never 1’s!! This will make for an amazing shrimp boil!

Being a foot long afterall, perhaps “shrimp” is not the appropriate name for the creature.

Shrimp = Bait. I was in Mbabane, Swaziland, back in the 80s. I had occasion to cruise by the Charge’s office one Saturday afternoon. Someone from the embassy in Maputo, Mozambique, had sent a crate of Indian Ocean shrimp to the Charge’. I had a look at some of those monsters; they were easily as big as my shoe.

YUM... they are so good that they farm them to sell here in Asia.

LINK

Most tiger prawns available on the US market are black tiger pawns that originate from prawn farms in Southeast Asia. They usually come raw with shell, cooked, easy peel or in other ready to eat forms. Americans are buying cultured prawns more and more every year because they can be cooked using just about any method you can think of and taste great.

I used to think the same thing about shrimp, lobster and crabs, but you have to remember these were people who would eat anything, if you would eat a grasshopper and a grub you wouldn't hesitate to eat a shrimp:) Probably a big step up, taste wise.
