DELAWARE TWP. — The device that exploded this morning, seriously injuring a 73-year-old man, was a 20 mm artillery shell.
That’s the word from Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns III.
He said that John Grimm III was in his garage working on a project involving two artillery shells, possibly making a lamp.
He successfully drilled the necessary holes in one shell, but when he was drilling the second shell, it exploded, sending shrapnel into his arms, chest and groin, Kearns said.
He believes the shells were of World War II vintage.

Everyone knows you put it in a vise and pound it a few times with a hammer to see if it’s live.
The ADA Vulcan Gun 20MM had an indirect fire capability, but would not call it “Artillery”.
Know a wreck diver who did something similar - found a
live 4” shell on one of the wrecks.
Took it home to make it into a lamp - extracted warhead
and was left with case still full of powder

It was most likely a 20 MM anti-aircraft fixed case and projectile. I am guessing he was drilling the case to pour the powder out. Dumb!

Can you really call 20mm artillery? I mean, doesn’t have to be like at least a 1 inch shell before you can use the word artillery?

It appears that he may have been successful in his lamp-making, if only for a few milliseconds.
From a school tour of the FBI that I did in ~1970, a bunch of gangsters acquired a 20mm anti-tank gun to use against armored cars in the 1930s. They were caught before they could use it.
