RAVENA -- New York State Police say they caught a man on a motorcycle doing nearly 170mph on the Thruway on Tuesday.

Troopers say spotted 25-year-old Nikkolaus McCarthy of Charleton near Ravena, gave chase, but broke it off soon after.

State Police caught up with him later in New Paltz when he ran low on gas. He was arrested and faces a slew of charges.

When he was taken into custody, McCarthy told officers he was capable of going even faster.

RAVENA -- Authorities say a 25-year-old upstate New York man has been arrested after troopers clocked him driving his motorcycle at 170 mph on the Thruway.

170 is cooking. He’s young, probably decided he was gonna do it, no matter what, even if he ended up a bug splat.

Me too. Hayabusa? I have had my bike up to 130 mph but that was several years ago. It is not worth going to jail, let alone becoming bug splatter.

If not hunkered down under a fairing the wind at that speed is brutal. Last two bikes were Yamaha’s the Vmax could do probably over 140, but never took it over 115. Scary. The older bike xs1100 I took up to 132 then backed off when I remembered I had a weather checked front tire. No fairing brutal wind.

Could be Haya. Certainly not Vespa. Out here just about the only thing they ticket for is tinted windows so he should have been ok. Ha! Until he crashed, of course. Hate to have to say it but the Oinks did him a favor (stopping him).

“Nikkolaus McCarthy”

Sounds (and the photo looks) like an adopted guy from Russia. Photo looks Russian too, with perhaps some fetal alcohol syndrome. I'm glad he didn't kill anyone, and hope he can stay safe in the future.

Reminds me of the youtube video of some guy that filmed his commutes on his bike through Moscow. Insane speeds in VERY heavy traffic. Rumor is that he was killed in a wreck. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XihQeZpwqpE Hold on to your hat (and lunch) watching the video.

If you land crooked, it gets hairy... Anyone running this fast, regularly, likely has equipped his bike with a steering stabilizer:

:) Nephew recently bought a bike from a police impound that had been clocked at 176. It too had run out of gas. It’s usually how they catch them. I’m not sure why this story is national news. What are we turning into? I’ve got four bikes now, but they’re all cruisers and dual sports.

I am not advocating it, but I have to p;oint out that at high speed vehicles going 60 mph are essentially stationary objects. The laws of physics prevent them from doing things that are too unpredictable.

I really do believe that if there were NO “to serve and protect” team out there the statistics would not change appreciably. The sheep just have to have the occasional presence of the “representative of the gummint” on the streets to keep them in their place. IMHO.

I don’t ride, but some folks I know do and go fast out on the straight, deserted roads of Eastern Washington State. I have heard them be concerned about the odd piece of gravel on the pavement at those high speeds.

When i lived in Canada there was/is a 50 mile strech of the 401 hwy between Kitchener Ont. and Toronto Ont. the cops let be known would’nt be patroled for speeding during rush hour, traffic flows at approx 100mph with absolutely zero increase in major accidents.

The Russian guy ...that is some serious riding skill (he is quite good) coupled with a mix of nads of steel and a brain that isn't smart enough to have a functioning survival instinct.

He is definitely very good since going at such speeds in tight traffic where all sorts of permutations and probabilities can occur, such as a car veering or a side mirror that is jutting out a tad bit, requires a very high degree of skill. Otherwise he would have crashed the first time he tried to make that video. Most motorcyclists wouldn't be able to even make one video like that even if they wanted to. He is a great rider. However, he is also foolish since there are so many other factors operating beyond his control. All it needs is for a car to veer onto him, or some rubble on the road, or any number of events that can happen and in the process convert that cyclist into a human cannonball. Every single car he passes at that speed is an exercise in cumulative arithmetic progression (maybe even geometric progression), and his control over many of those factors is very limited no matter how good he is.

There was also another rider (dressed all in black, European but not Russian) who used to do similar stuff. This chap however would race on highways, and he used to bait cops. I believe his videos were titled 'ghost rider' or something like that. I also wonder what happened to that guy.

We have potholes with their own zip-codes here in upstate NY.

Thankfully, every spring the state road guys repair them by filling them with sand.

Sand? Ungood for bikers. Bikes prefer real, old-fashioned good pavement. Anyone wanting to go that fast should rent some time on a racetrack (or get his head examined while its still in 1 piece, ha!) This guy should buy those good officers a great big box of chocolates - they saved his miserable life. ( Canandaigua. Beautiful !)

I don't care HOW "cool" or fast your crotch-rocket motorcycle is, there's NO WAY it's safe at speeds approaching or exceeding 100mph on public roadways. Sand, oil, gravel, etc. on the street will put you on your ass in a split second and there's no way around it. Race courses are free of debris, roadkill, sand, etc., but public roadways have no such conditions.

Those fools on motorcyles that do these sorts of things have NO BRAINS, and don't know what they're in for until it's too late.

I gave up bikes in 1988 after 25 years of riding pretty much only two wheels. My fourth trip to the hospital with multiple broken bones &c made me swear off of them. Gas going up over $4 a few years ago sent me back, but at a more sedate level. I have now a Honda 250cc Reflex. It will comfortably go any legal speed in this part of the country and the way I drive (a long commute at 40 mph) lets me get 75-80 miles a gallon. When (ha!) gas goes back under $2.50 I will re-activate my Chevy(pre GovernmentMotors).

“What are we turning into?”

The despair/hopelessness that plagued the urban underclass for decades has spread into the middle class as an increasing number of young Americans realize they have no future; you see it with the rise in teen pregnancy, drug abuse, body piercings/tattoos, and driving at 170 mph atop a speeding little machine.

These are America’s next generation of Dem voters, reliant on welfare and food stamps as a replacement for the jobs their parents used to work.
