RAVENA -- New York State Police say they caught a man on a motorcycle doing nearly 170mph on the Thruway on Tuesday.

Troopers say spotted 25-year-old Nikkolaus McCarthy of Charleton near Ravena, gave chase, but broke it off soon after.

State Police caught up with him later in New Paltz when he ran low on gas. He was arrested and faces a slew of charges.

When he was taken into custody, McCarthy told officers he was capable of going even faster.

RAVENA -- Authorities say a 25-year-old upstate New York man has been arrested after troopers clocked him driving his motorcycle at 170 mph on the Thruway.

I only once had any notion of going over a hundred. I was driving over a longish bridge in Panama City FL on a Yamaha XJ650 30 years ago (no other traffic) and there was a Navy Ground Effects Vehicle on the water going parallel to the bridge. The Navy had admitted to a top speed for those things “in excess of 70 mph.” I wondered how excessive that might be. I reached about 105 and the damned thing was still pulling away when I ran out of bridge and slowed back down.

“What are we turning into?”

-

Well, in large part the war on union jobs has been won. At least manufacturing unions. (government unions are growing)

Now the jobs are gone. Horrayy! We won! (looking around at the rubble)

Problem is, that just means now, more people cannot support themselves.

So democrats gained votes, in the process.

“Well, in large part the war on union jobs has been won. At least manufacturing unions. (government unions are growing)”

The manufacturing unions committed suicide. In an increasing number of Dem states, government workers are dropping like flies because they have become unsustainable. Without hard figures, I think it is a safe bet that NJ has less teachers/cops/firemen than 4 years ago; I don’t see how they could make up for the thousands laid off by budget cuts (which even climbed into the tenured ranks).

Many people forget that soon after 9/11, when the NYC government was asked how they intended to replace the 343 firemen killed on that day, the initial answer was: “We aren’t going to”. They had such an excess of personnel, and were already feeling the economic heat of financial firms leaving the city (one of the saving graces in the WTC was the number of vacancies in the buildings; more people may have died in the stairwells without them).

I’ve of the opinion that we ought to give these guys a chance to run their machines.

Not like morons through busy traffic, but by periodically temporarily closing roads (right after major construction finishes where other traffic is already diverted would be ideal) and allowing the public to have an occassional chance to feel some speed, after waivering of course.

More and more racetracks are shutting down, and most of them are filled with sanctioned events that discourage the general public from participating.

There’s a natural desire in many people to see what their machines can do. If we periodically gave them an opportunity, when we could make it reasonably safe for them and the public, ensure they aren’t drunk, and perhaps run a safety check on their equipment, a lot of people wouldn’t find the need to do crazy stuff like this.

I own that bike. 1/4 mile in 10 seconds @ 145 mph. So that’s zero to 145 in ten seconds.

Mine will do about the same, and supposedly will top out around 200, but I've only run it up to 150 several times and it will get there very quickly. I'm 53 and my playtime is now mostly 0 to 100. Click my screen name to see a pic.

Several studies have shown that speed doesn't kill, it's the difference of relative speeds between vehicles that cause most accidents. Like on I-696 in Detroit. Everybody goes 80 to 90 MPH. Is it more dangerous than other nearby interstates? No. BTW, the nickname for I-696 between Mt. Clemens and Southfield is "the autobahn" LOL.

I prefer the rockin’ chair situation, kicked back slow putt enjoyin’ the sites and smells of a mountain road. I really feel sorry for those that think speeding through life in all situations is the only way to live.

God gave us windin’ two lanes to enjoy the scenery. Just watch out for the sand and pebbles in the corners.

BTW, the dotted white lines have a reflective button every second stripe. How he kept from losing it while crossing them at that speed is beyond my comprehension.

We pay nearly the highest road taxes in USA but they are full of potholes, some dating from the Paleolithic Era. Sand would be an improvement. Count yer blessings. (We just got one repaired. It took a year of a whole bunch of people to get it done. The “work crews” or their stuporvisors went out to “inspect it” or mostly just “appreciate it” at least 6 times “to evaluate what should be done with it.” (Like, man, how about FIXING it!? Its spelled T-A-R, ok?” Ha! Well, one down, 69,000,000,000 to go! Ha.

Oh....I'm sorry. Which State of the Union is the Autobahn located in? I missed that part of geography where they mentioned that part of the USA.

Also, do they have the road conditions like the Autobahn in the USA, ANYWHERE in the Midwest, New England, etc.?

Also, is there a POSTED SPEED LIMIT on the Autobahn, like on ALL U.S. roads? (I thought not....but then, Highway and Local Laws don't apply to crotch-rocket/penis-envy types, like it does to mere mortals)

It isn’t, but you said public roads. You didn’t specify “in the US”. The point is that sweeping blanket statements like that are pretty dumb.

Also, you apparently haven’t heard of the BBORR or the Silver State Classic which are legal, sanctioned unlimited speed races held on... public roads.

Sorry....not into racing anymore, and public roads are for public use, observing the rules-of-the-road and LAWS that apply. To shut down a road for a "Road Course", and including for "Grand Prix" events, the roads are scrupulously cleaned and repaired to assure at least a HIGHER LEVEL of conditioning than a routine, everyday road surface.

Racing is for Race Courses, not public roads, except for true amateur idiots who think they are "special".

Mine's not seriously modern anymore - a 996 - but I do a few 150+ point-and-squirts on a nearby unbusy straightaway a few times a year. Being blessed with less travelled country twisties the real fun is in the 50 to 80 mph sweepers.

Don't try this on your Gravely Lumberson or you'll end up like these idiots.

Most 1000+ CC Crotch Rockets, like the one below, with the right chip will do 150+ easily.

My brother had the Suzuki version of that bike: GSXR1100.

We simply called it “The Antichrist” because it was impossible to drive the thing at legal speed. Just driving at my comfort level, I watched a “SPEED LIMIT 30” sign flash by and looked down to see 90MPH on the speedo. But, DAYUM, that machine was fun.

Bro got rid of it - never told me how many tickets he got.

BTW, neither of us were “kids” at the time; I was pushing 50 (pushing hard) and he was well into his 40s.
