Apple Is Beating Android In The U.S., Despite Reports To The Contrary

Apple appears to have taken control of 50% of the smartphone market in the first quarter of 2012, despite a report to the contrary by NPD this morning.

NPD put out a press release saying Android was the best selling smartphone operating system in the first quarter, grabbing 61% of the market. Apple's iOS was in second, according to NPD, with 29% of the market.

However, there's a big problem with this data. It runs contrary to what the carriers themselves are actually reporting.

At AT&T, Apple activated 4.3 million iPhones, or 78% of all AT&T smartphones for the quarter. At Verizon it activated 3.2 million iPhones, or 51% of all Verizon smartphones for the quarter. At Sprint it activated 1.5 million iPhones, or 60% of all smartphones for the quarter, according to Macquarie's Kevin Smithen.

Total it all up, and Apple had 63% of the smartphone market on those three big carriers.

Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T account for ~80% of the overall wireless market in the U.S., according to a Yankee Group report from August. If Apple accounted for 63% of 80% of the smartphone sales on those carriers, then it had 50% of the total smartphone market in the U.S. in the first quarter of the year.

So, how did NPD get to its number of 29%? We asked, and the answer wasn't all that satisfying.

Ross Rubin, executive director for Connected Intelligence at NPD, told us NPD's data is based on surveying 12,811 consumers about what smartphones they bought in the first quarter. We asked why he didn't cross it with actual reported results. He said that's not part of their methodology.

It's possible, but it looks sure looks like NPD is using faulty data to arrive at its conclusion. . .

NPD Group is in Port Wahington N.Y. I would pick up and experience the worst professionalism in a company. I would not trust them at all. “Creative” marketing company. LOL!!

No iPhones left in my immediate family anymore. Two WP7 phones and two older Symbian phones (one about to upgrade to Nokia L900 WP7). The live tiles, fast UI, seemless Facebook-Skydrive integration, great Zune player, and a stack of useful free apps make WP7 the right choice for us.

I might very well have an iPhone except the volume is so low it’s unusable for me...

Let’s see... You can determine the percentages by a market analysis or by taking a poll.

A Poll?

Seriously?

That isn’t news... it’s asinine.

Yep, I am loyal. Still using my old iPhone from years back, on the original battery and all.

Still loving my original iPad, too, with no problems.

Did I forget to mention that our original first edition Mac with the MacBottom never died. I was so mad when my husband sent it off, because I just knew that it would be worth some serious cash one day.

None of my Macs have ever died, the technology improved beyond them, but if you didn’t need to upgrade for business purposes, they all just kept on trucking’.

Never needed an IT guy to keep our business up and running either, and that did so much for our bottom line.

Some of us just appreciate stuff that works, without hassles and tinkering. Others need a different experience, or depend on helping others deal with tech troubles. To each his own, and let’s not squabble.

The percentage of phones activated in a single quarter is not the same as the percentage of phones in use.

Ok, Swordmaker, whatever you say.

we have facts and opinion, strange how often opinion over rules facts. Meanwhile anyone that ignored all the super smart Apple critics and held on to that Apple stock are probably laughing at all the experts.

You want to have a little fun go back and look at all the comments on the iPad, like what on earth would they be good for, they are not a computer.

Why on earth do you care for that matter? Either buy Apple or don’t know one cares.

Apple is doomed, again.

Android makes up 50+% of smartphone usage in the U.S. and the world.

This has been reported by all of the major tech blogs. It is not some conspiracy to rob Apple users of their smug need to feel like they are God’s gift to the universe.

But when you have to play with stats to rig something together to try to show a completely made up reality, it only shows that you guys are Really feeling insecure and sad.

“Some of us just appreciate stuff that works, without hassles and tinkering. Others need a different experience, or depend on helping others deal with tech troubles. To each his own, and let’s not squabble.”

Step 1 would be to not use silly assumptions that anything not made by Apple doesn’t work and needs constant tinkering.
It’s that childish attitude by Apple users is why you get squabbling by people that know better.

I have a Dell PowerEdge server (from 2007) that runs almost 24/7, running Windows 7, and I’ve had to do nothing to it. How is that possible?

Droid for serious users. Pink I’s for the teenie masses. Berries for business tho the berries are losing to ground to droids. Plus, there are still many folks who only want a free phone to talk, text and have a minimal capability for ‘net accessibility.

(This entry was typed sitting on my back deck on my lapdock 100 powered by my droid razr :)

Really? Show me any enterprise class business, or even a large number of small businesses that have selected android phones as their phone of choice for use. There are too many security issues. Most are switching to the iPhones.
