Romney donor pulls support, backs Obama, over same-sex marriage
CNN ^ | May 14, 2012 | Shannon Travis

"I feel that I no longer wish to support your presidential campaign and ask that you please return the maximum contribution that I gave to you last year," Bill White wrote in a letter addressed to the former Massachusetts governor and obtained by CNN.

"You have chosen to be on the wrong side of history and I do not support your run for president any longer," White added.

How can Romney be on the wrong side of history on gay marriage, when Obama and Romney are on the same side on the issue?

I have a general question about all of this: If Gays were allowed to marry:
If people who are not married at all but just enjoy masturbating... Could they not make a case that they should be allowed to file their taxes as Married filing jointly in order to receive better tax deductions and exemptions, since the only thing that determines their tax status is their sexual preference?

We’re supposed to care because CNN makes a big deal of this. Romney should stay the course. If he waffles on gay marriage, the only beneficiary will be Obama. The gay marriage issue is working in Romney’s favor.

The meme is that liberal lite doesn’t sell. Everyone who might have voted liberal lite always goes for full liberal in the end. Hence why anyone who voted for Romney in the primary thinking he could win the general election is an idiot.

As for being on the wrong side of history, is homosexuality something new? Last I checked there are references to it throughout history. I’m not sure why Shep thinks an ancient practice seen in primitive societies and usually condemned has anything to do with moving into the 21st century. Same goes for bestiality.

You’re probably right.

Is this “the” William Howard “Bill” White (born June 16, 1954) who is an American politician, member of the Democratic Party, and former mayor of Houston, and was an unsuccessful candidate in the 2010 Texas gubernatorial election, losing to incumbent Republican Rick Perry. Before serving as mayor, White was a lawyer and businessman, and served as U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy under President Bill Clinton from 1993 to 1995. White is on the membership roster of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Smells like a setup to me!

“We’re supposed to care because CNN makes a big deal of this”

No, I don’t care that in all the land, CNN was able to fine only one donor, who turned on Romney.

I’m just interested in the pattern recognition...and I think ‘the war on women’ is about to be usurped by ‘on the wrong side of history’...and we’ll have a new phoney baloney slogan every few weeks, until the election.

And if there are Obama supporters who have pulled their support and gone over to Romney (a statistical likelihood), what are the chances we’ll ever hear about it?

The gay marriage issue is working in Romney’s favor.

It certainly is and the best thing for Romney to do is to continue handling this just as he has so far.

That is, for him to simply say "Marriage is between one man and one woman but this election is really about Obama's failed economic policies."

Per ‘opensecrets dot org’, the only William Whites donating to Romney are:

William J White, Port Lookout NY...or
William Bryan White Jr, Pointe Lookout, NY

...which looks fishy.

Now it gets more interesting...William B White (who is definitely the guy in story, since he is listed as president of the Intrepid Museum) gave a total of $6,900 to Hillary in 2008, and our William J White is also on the Hillary list, giving $6,900.

I’m starting to wonder if this one guy has multiple personalities....according to this NYT article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/23/fashion/weddings/bill-white-bryan-eure-weddings.html

(announcing a gay marriage in October 2011), they are father and son.

Its either a poorly written article, or somebody is trying to fool the reader...the article is surely about senior, since it lists his past financial support for candidates dating back as far as Reagan (Junior would have been 17 for Reagan’s first successful run)...and since he is the only Bill White contributor to Romney. Yet, it goes on to give the son’s impressive resume....ah...a ‘composite’.

I checked opensecrets back as far as it would go, and sure enough, junior gave $500 to Bush in 92 and $2,000 to the other Bush in 2003....and $$$ to Hillary in 2005. And senior gave to Hillary in 2006.

Are you able to explain the policy differences between Obama and Romney on gay marriage?

For example, does Romney believe gay marriage should be left up to the states?

I thought maybe it was Betty White’s husband - she just loooooooooves BO. Could be the Bill White that was Mayor of Houston though - I thought he was older than 58. But he’s as Democrat as they come so seriously doubt if he would ever contribute to Romney. He’s too big a fan of BO.

Dear Mr. White.

Thank you for your inquiry. What I have done is instead of returning your generous donation, my campaign alas donated the proceeds to several pro-life groups. It’s for the women and children..

Thank you

So, what do you call people who thought voting for a conservative candidate at the expense of the other conservative candidate would not result in Romney becoming the nominee?
