My cousins husband went for a hike in the mountains and never came back. Speculation is that this is what happened to him,without the partner to go for help.

Wow, that is bad news. If you are alone and something bad happens most times you are out of luck. One exception was the guy they based the movie 127 Hours on, although he lost his arm.
