It’s easy for me to hate an evil thing that swoops down from the sky and takes innocent cats or dogs back to its nest to tear alive to pieces.

I hate birds of prey.

Really?

You probably hate tigers too, then.

Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
In the forests of the night:
What immortal hand or eye,
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies,
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare sieze the fire?

And what shoulder, & what art,
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? & what dread feet?

What the hammer? what the chain,
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp,
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

When the stars threw down their spears
And water’d heaven with their tears:
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee?

Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
In the forests of the night:
What immortal hand or eye,
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

--- William Blake

I’ve been lucky that so far no hawk has been able to attack my chickens and ducks. I lost one chicken, which was left out of the coop one evening (she refused to go in) and either a visiting dog got her or perhaps the owl we sometimes hear during the night got her. But, as beautiful as birds of prey are, I am no longer as enamored of them as I was because I’ve become attached to my small flock, each of which has her own personality and are great egg layers. So far I’ve either seen the hawks flying near by, grabbed a treat for the flock and managed to call them into the covered pen or the hens have raised a loud alarm and I’ve gone out and again managed to get them safely fenced in.

I thought pups start opening their eyes at 10 days and the pup looks to be a little older than newborn; nowhere close to 8 weeks.

Nah. The most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in the wild was an osprey hitting the water and carrying off a fish. Animals don’t have free will or immortal souls so there is no possiblity of evil. They need to eat, mate and take of their young. How they do it inconvenient for man sometimes but there is no evil.

Yep. Jack Russells’ are very tenacious and don’t give up. My Black Labs’ bestest buddy is a female Jack Russell. She is almost scary fearless. Then again, my Lab will do about anything to protect her. He loves his ladies.....:-)

Bouschard's still trying to figure out why the hawk decided to release the puppy from it's clutches.

To kill it, probably. It almost succeeded, and the second drop would definitely have completed the job, no muss no fuss.

And he would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling teenagers.

Lucky doggie!

Most raptors will kill the animal before they bring it to the nest...fish are the exception. You can’t bring a rabbit, rat, or squirrel back to a nest alive (think about it for a second). So they kill it (or try to) and then bring it “home” to the babies. If the raptor is not “working” his/her nest, they land somewhere and suffocate it with their feet before eating.

We always ‘helped’ our puppies and kittens open their eyes so they had a jump up.

Of course, this is back when it was legal to possess a litter of puppies or kittens.

Evil creatures. I’d shoot all of them I could if it didn’t mean landing in jail.

Shoot it and then put it in the trash barrel of a disliked neighbor.

Works real well with herons. Federal offense.
