DODGED A BULLET
self | May 17, 2012 | swampsniper

Posted on 05/17/2012 9:01:23 AM PDT by SWAMPSNIPER

I take 2 medications known to aggravate cataracts and Glaucoma. The cataracts are becoming a major problem.

I got checked out this morning, no Glaucoma, no macular degeneration and the cataracts can be eliminated.

I've been sweating this one out for a while.

Surgery on the right eye May 29th, June 19 for the left.

Best of luck. My dad has the same issue, two surgeries next month.

Glad it wasn’t worse news.

You don’t need to wish me good luck - I’m not having the operation. I never said it “was a piece of cake.” But I’ll stick with my personal experiences - which are all positive - and not try to worry a fellow freeper.

Advair and Spiriva both put you at risk.

I use both.

I had the procedure done on both eyes 13 years ago and it was a piece of cake. Each eye took about eight minutes and the doc did each eye a month apart. Still have the original acrylic implants and can even notice it. The only “hassle” is that you’ll need reading glass of different strengths, depending on what you’re doing. For working on the computer, I use a 1.5, for reading in a chair a 2.5 and for reading in bed a 3.25.

One of the best things I’ve ever done.

I can't function at all in bright sunlight, the cataracts scatter the light all over the place. Can't see after dark either.

I don't want to stay indoors all the time.

Versed has a nasty side effect found in a significant number of people ... it not only blocks short term memory, it can cause short term memory problems for a looooong time after the drug supposedly wears off. My brother had surgery years ago and the anesthesiologist used versed to mask the pain of being awakened mid surgery to check nerve stuff. The versed wiped out memories ayear old and made it very difficult for him to remember things like phone numbers, names, addresses, or such. And no he does not have ‘old timers’. It was the Versed.

You’ll be glad you did. I had it done and it was a very interesting experience, loads of waving colors in shades of pink. Two weeks later the other eye. My Dr put in lenses for reading, no glasses for driving as I’m far sighted. It is just great! Good luck.

Yup ~ I lost the month of February to Versed once. And that was after the surgery.

In some people it can be stored in the body's fatty tissues and fed out slowly and can cause problems for years.

If you are 60 or over you'll want to make sure they give you no more than a 1/4 dose ~

Wish you the best success. Do you think you’ll be able to use iron sights after the procedure(s)?

There are certain activities which my mother told me would cause blindness. Good thing medical science has advanced to the point it has. Cataract surgery is miraculous these days.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Interesting as I had the cataract surgery for both eyes exactly ten years ago, and mine were done in May, and July as well.

My operations were at the Jerry Pettus VA Hospital at the Loma Linda University Hospital complex eye center. Great job they did. So thankful to be able to see again.

By the time of the scheduled operations my eyes had deteriorated to the point of being virtually blind as all I could see was the swirling colored mud, almost like peering through a kaleidoscope, and seeing the Orange, brown, black, and yellow swirl backlit by whatever light source there was wherever I was.

It’s an interesting operation in which you are awake the full time doing as the Dr. tells you to do, but you don’t feel a thing as they give you a shot prior to the operation the dulls everything.

I still required glasses for minor corrections, but could see, and that’s what it is all about.

You’ll be very happy when it’s all over, and the procedure is so common anymore it’s almost bullet proof, so NOT to worry.

Congrats on the no Glaucoma and no macular degeneration. Good luck with the cataracts surgery. Two guys in my office have had it with no problems.

I’m 69 and have had it done to both eyes, each time when I noticed visible deterioration of my vision. It’s a very simple procedure that takes about ten minutes in the operating room plus about an hour of preparation. The prep consists of administering a total knockout drug and injecting a strong local anesthetic into or near the eye that’s to be done. Then you spend about ten minutes in the OR watching lights while the surgery is performed. My outcome was great and my vision in each eye is better than before.

Thanks. Very interesting. Have a friend that told me just a few days ago that he has cataracts. He uses two different inhalers. His doc says he doesn’t quite need surgery yet.
