This week science fiction writer Elizabeth Moon argues that everyone should be given a barcode at birth.
If I were empress of the Universe I would insist on every individual having a unique ID permanently attached - a barcode if you will; an implanted chip to provide an easy, fast inexpensive way to identify individuals.

Needless to say, while there are a multitude of applications where this technology would make sense, some even beneficial, it still does not address the first and foremost issue of the human race. The right to be free from government control.
Thoughts?

Mark of the Beast. BIBLICAL implications here.
You’ll have to kill me before I submit to something like this. I will never be marked.
Exactly what I thought!!!
Tick ... tick ... tick.
We’re heading there, eventually. That’s for certain.
I’m with you. No Mark of the Beast for me neither.

Revelation 14:8-12
King James Version (KJV)
8 And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.
9 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,
10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:
11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.
12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.
Database mix-ups happen all the time, systems are hacked, data isn't kept up-to-date between applications, the phone lines go down in Bangalore....
A 75 year-old man from South Dakota could suddenly be labeled a "terrorist," and could be whisked away in the middle of the night, detained in some holding cell. What rights would one have against "the system?"
Another crazy loon.
Another fantasy that someone has to have ultimate power over people and to subjugate them under their will. Her fantasy does not consider the wishes of the individual, or what they want. Typical fantasy of of a tyrant, both for those in power and those that are not. I imagine some narcissistic control freak in power somewhere will try this someday soon.
I don’t understand why a certain few people insist on as much total control of people as possible. It’s offensive and unacceptable.
My rule is this... You put something in me or my family, I get to put something in you. Guess which is going to hurt worse and be fatal?
Just because you can do something doesn’t necessarily mean you should.
My response was . . . sarcasm. Hence the /s at the end. As mentioned after me, Biblical verses indicate a marking (and tracking) mechanism for each human will allow a global government to control every human on earth. No buying or selling without the mark is pretty strong medicine to induce the will of the (demonically ran) government. One would lose all earthly possessions. No job. No visible means of support. No security except knowing one did not receive the Mark. You may preserve your soul but the odds will be good you will lose your life.
she’s lucky the Book of Revelations is in the public domain...
If you carry a credit/debit card and use it, you have already submitted. Same with your driver's license. Cross the border into Canada and they know a lot about you just from your license plate number.
If you carry a smart phone, you are even more in submission. With one of those things in your hand, they know your every move. Download a app or two and everything you do with that phone is available information.
The only difference between what you do now and a chip under your skin is the location of the information source. In your pocket or purse or under your skin, that is the only difference.
She was JOKING.
Ryk Spoor
Thankfully, Ms. Moon’s little idea of universal barcoding turned out to be intended as a joke; she was apparently as surprised as anyone else when they chose to run with it.
(Like Elizabeth Mood, Ryk Spoor is also an SF author and he is a friend Elizabeth Moon.)
Is every Ayn Rand book coming to life? This is straight out of ANTHEM.
It is ridiculous but if we could have this done just for stopping kidnapping and other such stuff then I would be for it. However, it would have to be throughout the body somehow so, some would be kidnapper wouldn’t just cut off the body part with the scan. If this was possible, it would be 100 percent worth it to save people who are killed during a kidnapping or kids who are molested by strangers that take them.
Yes, I understood your response; I merely chose your rhetorical, although sarcastic question, and answered it. I wasn’t necessarily responding directly to you, as you seem to have a keen awareness of all the implications of such a mark.
You just beat me to it...How true............
Are you kidding, too? No, it would not be "100 percent worth it to save people who are killed during a kidnapping or kids who are molested by strangers that take them." How does a barcode prevent a crime before it happens? Even if it could do so, no, it would certainly not be worth turning us all into little robots, any more than we already are.
“I would insist on every individual having a unique ID permanently attached “
We’ll just ensconce it in your fat head.
Don’t carry a credit or debit card except to get cash out of the bank. Driver’s license is mandatory.
I don’t live anywhere near a border.
I don’t have a smartphone.
Preaching to the choir.
God already beat her to it.
We all have at least two bar codes and maybe more, built in by nature.
Your fingerprints and your iris.
It’s how God keeps us all sorted out I guess.
There have already been people with that power. It did not turn out well, but today's socialists are confident that they could do better than the (national) socialists of the 1930s and 1940s.

Although I expect God doesn't need DNA to differentiate us.
My family and friends would all refuse such a mark. We know it for what it is. However, since we are Christians, I am sure the government would just imprision or shoot us, but give Muslims a free ride.
I say work makes us free. Go for it!
Elizabeth Loon, er, Moon. Thanks EQAndyBuzz.
They would be on a short leash.
Taking the Mark of the Beast damns one’s soul forever with no possibility of repentance.
That’s pretty scary.

Also, I was reading on another forum (might have been Conservatives4Palin) that apparently buried deep in the Obamacare nonsense is a provision that deals with placing implanted chips in people. I don't know any more than that, or if there's anything to it, as I'm not up to wading through that 2,000+ pages of garbage legislation.
Side note to anyone reading this: Add up how much interest you pay in a month. Then calculate what you would do with all that money you pay in interest if you did not have those loans. Get out of debt!
If the government mandates that doctors mark babies upon birth, there may not be much choice involved.

I suspect mid-wifing would become a burgeoning industry.
True FREE men would be the result. No SSN, no chip. Can't buy or sell. Hmmmn.
The part that people leave out is that the “mark of the beast” is more than just a simple mark. The Bible talks about people that take the mark worshiping the beast. That indicates to me that there is some type of loyalty oath involved—something where you disavow God and pledge your loyalty to the beast.
An infant is incapable of taking a vow, hence putting a barcode on one would not meet all the requirements laid down by the Bible for it to be the mark of the beast. The mark will have to be something given to adults (or at least people old enough to make an informed decision to reject God).
IMHO, it doesn’t need to by a physical mark or implant. It could be modeled on customer loyalty cards used by so many merchants currently. You take the loyalty oath to the beast, and you are given a loyalty card. Before you can make a purchase, you must swipe the card (number in the hand) or enter the number on a keypad or verbally tell the cashier the number (our memory is in the frontal lobes of the brain, so literally the number would be stored in the forehead).
No, I obviously don’t know for sure this is it, but we should be wary of reading our current biases for a physical mark into the Bible. God may have used the word mark to describe something that not only hasn’t been invented yet but that we’re incapable of imagining.
