I saw something many, many years ago, I was about 17.

My bed was situated sideways next to the bedroom window, I often slept with the window open and no screen.

In the middle of the night, 2 or 3 AM, I abruptly woke up and immediately looked out the window. Don’t know why.

Far above, in the sky there was this thing. Not anything I would call a ship or a plane, the nest way I can describe it is:
Take a soccer ball.
Glue a bunch of pyramids onto it.
Make it a glowing, translucent purple.

It came straight down at me, and whether it was real or just my imagination, I was so scared I ducked - looked up, and never saw it again.

I can say this much - for those brief moments (and the whole incident probably took maybe five seconds), for those few moments, and for ALL THE DECADES I have lived since then, THAT THING WAS REAL.

And at least part of my study I have tried to see if anyone else ever saw a similar thing, but never heard of it.

Whatever it was...

I believe you. There are things we can not explain because we don’t have the knowledge and experience to say what is real and what is an illusion.

An illusion is merely an unknown object that you are unfamiliar with and your brain tries to categorize as best it can with the knowledge you have and sometimes it gets kind of kinky while doing so.

Do you, or did you, have night paralysis?

I haven't had a night paralysis attack for a few years, but used to frequently get them when I was a kid. They would often come with very vivid hallucinations, usually of the room I was in (my eyes were closed, but I "saw" it anyway). But sometimes, something really frightening would appear. Vivid hallucinations are not uncommon in those afflicted by night paralysis.

When I was in Meteorology doing Shuttle and ELV support we would release a bunch of these Jimspheres, http://www.ehartwell.com/afj/Jimsphere

They would often get caught in the Jet stream and I was told that it was possible for them to stay up in the atmosphere for weeks since they were made of aluminized mylar and because of their design would eventually float at around 55k feet.
