WEST YELLOWSTONE, Mont. (CBS Seattle/AP) — Officials in Yellowstone National Park say a Massachusetts man was gored by a bull bison that threw him 10 feet in the air and then pinned him to the ground.

The man, who is in his mid-50s, suffered a broken collarbone, shoulder blade, several ribs and a groin injury in Saturday’s encounter near the Norris campground.

I understand that you can herd bison anywhere they want to go.

One of my most distinct memories as a child was a trip my family took, driving across the country in the late 70's. One of the places we went on the way to Yellowstone was the Custer State Park which had a herd of bison.

Before hitting the main herd we started seeing the old solitary bulls hanging out on the fringe of the herd. A guy in a truck in front of us pulled over to take a picture of a bull that was standing by the side of the road. He had one of those 115 Kodak instamatics so, of course, he got out of his truck to get a good picture. My father pulled over and announced to the kids in the back seat "Pay attention kids. You are about to see a man get killed." Mom yelled at Dad for that comment, the bull turned, and as soon as the shutter clicked, charged the man who ran back to his truck. He made it by diving through the open window of the truck. The bull hit the door of that truck without slowing down, putting a huge dent in the door, then trotted away like nothing had happened. It was pretty awesome to see.

Another victim of “The Bambi Syndrome.”

Yep.

Even relatively tame bison are ornery critters.

The wild ones can be downright dangerous.

We camped at Yellowstone Park in 1964 when I was 12 and a ranger told us about a couple who tried to put their toddler on the back of a grizzly bear for a photo. The bear wasn’t into it, but nobody was harmed.

a few years ago, a friend in Colorado who raises Buffalo took me for a tour in his pickup truck right out into the middle of the herd. They looked so tame and docile I asked him if I could get out of the truck for better camera shots. He said , hell no, you crazy, those mothers with calves will attack you. I stayed in the truck.

This guy *has* to be related to a woman in Galveston who got bit by two monkeys at Moody Gardens. In his case he did not back off when the buffalo approached him. In her case she grabbed a monkey (it was in a cage-less environment) and the monkey bit her in self-defense and another monkey bit her trying to help the first monkey.

(That story is here: http://galvestondailynews.com/story/323286).

(It's called WILDlife for a reason. That first syllable *means* something.)

Buddy: "Uh, Bill, got a bison walkin' this way."

BtD (consulting pamphlet): "Well, sit right there. Don't let him know you're afraid."

Buddy: "He's still coming, and his eyes are really red..."

BtD: "Sez here, 'Don't show fear. Make yourself look big and look him right in the eye.'"

Buddy: "Uh, Bill, he's startin' to breathe hard and I don't like the look he's giving me."

BtD: "Book sez yer supposed ta bare yer teeth and hiss at him."

Buddy: "HE'S CHARGING!"

BtD (flipping pages): "Oh, wrong animal. Sorry."

Darwin candidate....he’s lucky he survived....maybe

Depending on the definition of "groin injury" he might still be in the running for a Darwin Award. Dying isn't the only way to be taken out of the gene pool.

The Park only gives you about a thousand warnings to observe bison only from your car. I don’t know why people think these warnings don’t really mean anything. Stupid is as stupid does.

Those animals have no reverse gear. They are afraid of very little. At Fort Riley on year we even had them bash in the side of a Deuce-and-Half.

that line tells me that I'd like to be sitting at the table after a big dinner and listen to your Father tell stories.

“Park officials say the man was not taunting the animal, but let the bull approach within a few feet of where he was sitting and refused to move away.”

Nature has a way of weeding out stupid people.

We call the tourons - a cross between tourists and morons. Just about every year bison play soccer with one or two of the idiots who ignore the warnings.
