No-I expected them to get one of the doctors to do the piercing-but those two nurses were horrified at the very idea that I’d want my baby’s ears pierced, even after I explained that it was customary to do that. I insisted that if they clip boys, a girl should be able to get a simple ear piercing, but the logic of that was completely lost on them.

that is weird that they were aghast. surely they wouldn't raise an eyebrow up here as we have every stripe of foreigner on the planet, and many of them also pierce the ears at birth. i think it's adorable. i waited til mine were 3 to pierce their’s. My jewish OB circumcised xsboy in the hospital.

I don’t think it’s a doctor’s or nurse’s job to pierce ears. You did it yourself, which is the correct solution.

Are you kidding? their job is to do what you ask and pay them to do. My mother took me to the Dr. to pierce my ears when i was 13 yo. they didn’t have storeclerks doing them back in the day, and she didn’t want me having friends do it with ice and string and the potential infections that were inevitable. she wanted hygienice surroundings.

This act of commination of firing a woman for doing the right thing, who refused to sell cigarettes to a low-life, entitled little minor who was using a taxpayer funded free money card is why I really do fear for my country.

I could not disagree more with your first sentence. Professionals have the right to refuse to do anything they find objectionable.

No, I wasn’t kidding. I also wasn’t considering what life was like before “ear piercing at the mall” was a common thing.

To me, it would be completely preposterous to ask a doctor or nurse to pierce ears in a maternity ward.

Today.

Maybe 40-50 years ago was a different thing. Or a different culture might have OB/GYN ear piercers as a matter of culture.

i am talking about ear piercing here, not abortions. And of course they can refuse to do whatever, but Dave’s point was that ear piercing is not a medical job and that is just ridiculous. Saying that piercing your baby’s ears yourself rather than having a medical professional do it is the proper course is just wrong. I am astounded that nurses would refuse to something culturally common. ESP in texas.

Once again your concept of preposterous is spawned directly from your parochialism. I am sure at Allegheny General it might not be common, but i assure you down here this would not remotely be a preposterous request. so yes, a DIFFERENT CULTURE meaning an ethnically diverse major metropolitan area as opposed to PODUNK WESTERN FRICKING PA!

Do you think they teach ear piercing at medical school?

You know, I did express that other times and cultures may be different. I’m not sure what else you want.

Medical professionals should beware. Have you read through the new HC bill yet? You may find ObamaCare has different rules.

I just remembered that I had the hole in my ear tear a few years back, went to the derm who cut and sewed it up. Had to wait I forget how long now but went back to her to re-pierce it. She said I could’ve gone to a plastic surgeon to have it done but I was comfortable with the derm doing it. So there you go, THIS CENTURY and suburban VA doctors are dealing with ear piercing. You going off half cocked on the where’s and what fors of piercing and exactly WHAT is your experience in that regard? Sarah had it done at Claire’s and you think you’re an authority, is my guess.
