Ancient Text Confirms Mayan Calendar End Date

A newly discovered Mayan text reveals the "end date" for the Mayan calendar, becoming only the second known document to do so. But unlike some modern people, ancient Maya did not expect the world to end on that date, researchers said.

"This text talks about ancient political history rather than prophecy," Marcello Canuto, the director of Tulane University Middle America Research Institute, said in a statement. "This new evidence suggests that the 13 bak'tun date was an important calendrical event that would have been celebrated by the ancient Maya; however, they make no apocalyptic prophecies whatsoever regarding the date."

If the car didn't erupt into a fireball when you rolled over 120,000 miles, it's probably not going to do so when you hit 130,000. The next bak'tun takes us to long count 13.0.0.0.0.

No - the mayan’s did not consider leap years. Their calendar already ended - in July 2010 IIRC.

The modern sidereal year is something like 365.242198 days long (that’s what it was when i was in high school, it may have been refined a bit more since).

The Mayan calendar was a bunch of calendars all running concurrently (they kept track of the lunar cycles, the Venus cycle, etc), but their solar calendar was 365 days long, no account being made for the fractional day. The five days added to the 360 day calendar weren’t assigned to a specific month; analogously, the Egyptians later added five days to their 360-day solar calendar, which had exactly 12 months of 30 days each.

My brother sincerely believe in the Mayan Calendar and every time I call him, he reminds me that the Great Change is coming on Dec 21st this year.

I keep telling him that while I'm very fond of mysteries to stop spoiling the suspense.
