Two great white sharks were spotted off the coast of Chatham on Thursday, the first documented sightings of the 2012 summer season, according to the Sandwich-based Cape Cod Shark Hunters.

“I spotted a couple yesterday,” spotter pilot George Breen said today. “One was about a quarter-mile offshore and the bigger of the two was about 50 yards off.”

Farewell and adieu you ladies of Spain.

And so nevermore shall we see you again.

Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into our side, Chief. We was comin' back from the island of Tinian to Leyte... just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes. Didn't see the first shark for about a half an hour. Tiger. 13-footer. You know how you know that when you're in the water, Chief? You tell by looking from the dorsal to the tail fin. What we didn't know, was our bomb mission had been so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, Chief, sharks come cruisin', so we formed ourselves into tight groups. You know, it was kinda like old squares in the battle like you see in the calendar named "The Battle of Waterloo" and the idea was: shark comes to the nearest man, that man he starts poundin' and hollerin' and screamin' and sometimes the shark will go away... but sometimes he wouldn't go away. Sometimes that shark he looks right into ya. Right into your eyes. And, you know, the thing about a shark... he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, doesn't seem to be living... until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'. The ocean turns red, and despite all the poundin' and the hollerin', they all come in and they... rip you to pieces. You know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men. I don't know how many sharks, maybe a thousand. I know how many men, they averaged six an hour. On Thursday morning, Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player. Boatswain's mate. I thought he was asleep. I reached over to wake him up. He bobbed up, down in the water just like a kinda top. Upended. Well, he'd been bitten in half below the waist. Noon, the fifth day, Mr. Hooper, a Lockheed Ventura saw us. He swung in low and he saw us... he was a young pilot, a lot younger than Mr. Hooper. Anyway, he saw us and he come in low and three hours later a big fat PBY comes down and starts to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened... waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went in the water; 316 men come out and the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945. Anyway, we delivered the bomb.

One of my favorite scenes of all time. Robert Shaw was great - miss his acting.

I hope they don't have any "Boat Accidents" on that beach.

Whenever I see Robert Shaw in a Film, all I think of is his acting as Quint.

Oh great ... and I’ve spent the past 3 days bobbing around off Nauset Beach (mediocre waves but the new surfboard makes it mandatory). Lots of seals out there ... big fat ones.

I've heard that it's funny (well, not so funny actually) is how similar somebody swimming in a black wet suit and a seal appear from underneath. I have a very good friend in California who surfs regularly and I have to say I worry about him sometimes.

Good luck to you both.

If there are seals out there, then most likely the sharks are coming. I would suggest staying away from the seals. :)

Sandwich-based Cape Cod Shark Hunters.

I could go for a cod sandwich or a shark sandwich.

I am petrified of the ocean! You would be lucky to get me to cover my toes in the water. If a wave comes I run back. I’ve had too many incidents in the ocean to appreciate it! Boat.... Not a chance! lol

If I was on that sailboat with you, I’d be screaming the whole way. hahaha

1.) Cut fresh thawed shark steaks into 1 inch shark cubes.
2.) Wrap shark cubes with bacon and secure bacon with tooth picks.
3.) Sprinkle bacon-wrapped shark cubes with garlic salt.
4.) Cook bacon-wrapped garlic salt-sprinkled shark cubes on grill.

One of the most powerful, well done soliloquies ever in movie-dom. Robert Shaw could pull you right into the scene.

Rotten Shark

Hákarl is traditionally prepared by gutting and beheading a Greenland or basking shark and placing it in a shallow hole dug in gravelly-sand, with the now-cleaned cavity resting on a slight hill. The shark is then covered with sand and gravel, and stones are then placed on top of the sand in order to press the shark. The fluids from the shark are in this way pressed out of the body. The shark ferments in this fashion for 6–12 weeks depending on the season.

Following this curing period, the shark is then cut into strips and hung to dry for several months. During this drying period a brown crust will develop, which is removed prior to cutting the shark into small pieces and serving.

You’d like that song - sounds like Texas singin’.

I would’ve like Quint if he were real. I’ve worked with a lot of men over the years that were pretty close, but he was a top shelf working class portrayal. BTW, I don’t bestow that honor lightly...

Yup...The Taking of Pelham and Doyle Lonigan from The Sting come quickly to mind. A genius.....Also, props for being spot on about Roberts in some thread the other night where you were liberally mocked.
