An Australian Olympic swimmer has been criticised for posing in a bikini deemed 'too revealing' - but has started a copycat craze of people wearing the outfit.
Triple gold medalist Stephanie Rice posted the picture of her in a two-piece designer swimsuit on Twitter earlier this week.
The bikini - known as the 'tomb raider' - had been given to her as a birthday present from the designer Ellie Gonsalves.
But critics blasted for the sports star for showing off in the costume which some claimed was 'too sexy'.
One fan tweeted: 'Stephanie Rice posting a photo of herself in swimwear has brought disgrace to the Australian swim team and she should be dropped.'
Despite the public backlash, Miss Rice left the photo on her Instagram page.
There were also claims that by posing in the swimsuit she could have breached a sponsorship contract with Speedo.
However, her management denied that she had broken any rules.
A spokesman said: 'No, Stephanie isn't an ambassador for Ellie Gonsalves, she just loves their stuff.
'She doesn't have any relationship with Speedo anymore so there are no restrictions there.'
Despite some criticism, the picture sparked a string of spoofs with men posting pictures of themselves in the same costume. Many of the them were supporting the swimmer.

Definitely not guilty.
Some of that was actually funny. Seriously, though, aren’t there more important things to worry about right now?
As a former competitive swimmer, there’s nothing there that offends me.
And its about time I saw men that actually look GOOD in Speedos.
The chest hair in combo with that bikini is pretty disgusting.
WOW she has really bright eyes !
I see no problems here, and would like to take the opportunity to encourage her to share more pics. :)
If that's controversial, the Ozzies are farther gone than I'd hoped. :-(
This sounds like the whining from the “female athlete not acting like a lesbian” crowd
Womens sports are never going to gain traction until the ladies who can mix the athletic and the pretty get treated with respect from the “Lesbian” crowd.
Let us pray that the muffin tops (of any of the four sexes) with the tramp stamps do NOT, NOT I say, emulate.
PS: Could use pockets.

I’d like to offer my services pro bono. I’m not a lawyer, but still.
I was offended by the cretins calling her a homophobe.
Sodomy nazis invented the word homophobe to disparage and prevent rational thinking on same-sex attraction disorder.
“Homophobia? Oh, you mean the entirely normal aversion that normal people feel for perverts.”
In September 2010, Rice came under fire when she made a remark that was considered homophobic on Twitter following a Rugby Union match in which the Australian Wallabies defeated the South African Springboks. Rice's Twitter message said "Suck on that faggots!". Rice later removed the remark and apologised for it; however, Rice's sponsor Jaguar severed all ties with her and requested the return of a loan vehicle.
Stephanie Rice is a woman of her own mind.
That Rice is BOILIN’ hot, baby!;)
And it looks like there would be no stray hair in the bowl, either;)
Oh, my Sal, she is a maiden fair
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day
With flashing eyes and curly hair
Sing Polly wolly doodle all the day
(Leon Redbone sings it, "curly eyes and laughing hair")
Stephanie Rice, pride of Australia. Nice swimsuit BTW. Have the Aussies turned into a bunch of candy-ass sissies? Here in the US, she would have to fight off guys with a bayonet.
I’m betting Drapes and Hardwood.
Ain’t no matching Shag Carpeting there.

A bit skimpy suit, but now we know the real reason for the attacks.
I wonder if she has noticed an increasing number of snakes in the water since she posted that photo!
That is THE ugliest bikini I have ever seen.
What’s the big deal?
By modern standards, that bikini is a potato sack!
Eyes plural? Ever see these two in the same room together?
I had’nt noticed. You’re right. Way too much fabric.
I thought leela had 3 breasts ?
No your thinking of the prostitute in Total Recall! Which they are remaking, I don’t think they even go to Mars? How is that a remake?
“WOW she has really bright eyes “
She has eyes? Hadn’t noticed.
Swimmers have the best bodies in the world.
I agree. She should take it off.
This is controversial in Australia? I’ve seen much less than that on Sydney’s Bondi beach.
You meant to say pro boner perhaps?
You have to understand why the gun photo is so controversial. There’s a lot of anti-gun feeling in Australia anyway, so whoever was in it, might have sparked some comment, but it really was a major issue because of who the two men in it are.
One is Nick D’Arcy. In American terms, he’s a convicted felon, in anyone’s terms he’s a vicious, savage thug. He was banned from the Australian Olympic team in 2008 for a brutal attack on a fellow athlete - he fractured the man’s skull, and jaw, and broke his nose is well. He was convicted of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, and only avoided going to prison because of his youth and his guilty plea - they suspended his sentence. He’s been given a second chance to represent Australia in London and so he should have been on his absolute behaviour and not doing anything that might have drawn any sort of negative attention to himself.
The person with him, Kenrick Monk, isn’t quite as bad, but he’s also been in trouble with the police and only very recently. He made a false report that he had been hit by a car while riding his bike to explain injuries that he actually sustained riding a skateboard, which he had been banned from doing by team officials in case he injured himself. He was very lucky to avoid criminal charges being laid for making a false report, but again, he’s been expected to be especially well behaved ever since.
If it had just been two random athletes, the picture probably wouldn’t have made the papers - but these two had journalists looking for a story about them doing something that could be turned into a controversy and they delivered - especially D’Arcy with his record of criminal violence.
Oh no! A swimmer in a bathing suit! It’s not like she has to race in it. But as a woman I don’t like where it would leave tan lines. But I also think most of the people on this thread don’t care about the tan lines!
Doesn't the Daily News employ any copy editors?
You can't make this stuff up. OK You could, but noöne would believe you.
Yeah, she has bright eyes.
Hiiilarious comment. Thanks.
Otherwise, the picture is, to me, totally unremarkable, not sexy, and not likely to impart an onanistic impulse in the most eager of teen boys.
I am amazed what passes as news these days...
A swimmer who poses in a bikini ...Wow, Simply scandalous...
Great catch on the “homophobic sins” of this lady, and the real reasons for this story. She has “sinned” against the butch lesbian athletic world.
Thank you. I’m glad I’m not alone. I needed some cheering up today.
Lose the bondage belts and it would be more sexy
