I'd appreciate suggestions for online streaming TV and movie providers (other than biggies like Netflix or those from specific cable systems). I've watched a Hulu at times and I think it is legit, but Google turns up a lot of garbage that really looks questionable, or sites that ask for personal information that feel like scams. I'm not a huge TV watcher so it's not worth inviting viruses and malware or putting up with time limits and poor quality feeds.
I'm willing to pay a reasonable fee for a service or site that would allow me to watch classic TV series especially from the 1960s to present.
Try www.cinevault.com There are some fine classic movies, documentaries, and B movie junk from the 40s and 50s that can be fun if you are in the right mood. Free.
Crackle has a few movies. It’s free and legit. Youtube has a lot of free movies as well.

If you would rather just have a direct link to a movie (Promethius/Brave/Lincoln/Avengers) etc, Cable channel (HBO,Conemax/Showtime/Disney Espn etc) or TV show, (Seinfeld, Star Treks, CSI, Psyche, etc) feel free to ask.
Many of the sites have chat on the sides to fit in the “for discussion purposes” clause of the copyright law. Pretty weak but thats their shtick. Cool thing is no downloading files. Just click and watch like Youtube. The first one you do need to download the player to watch in HD.

It can actually be cheaper to buy used DVDs than fuss with streaming or rentals.
For example, gohastings.com has an enormous selection of $2 movies, used but in pretty good condition, with 98 cents shipping per item.
That’s about the same as the large $3 selection you can get at Big Lots!
Now granted that is more than streaming or rental, but you get to keep the legal movie. So if you really like a movie, why not?

I’ve thought about this a lot. I’ve got Dish, along with WIFI through DSL connected through Dish to my HD TV. The problem is access is strangely cumbersome and complicated with no keyboard, etc. Putting a ‘system’ (for a TV) together that works as well as watching stuff on a DSL connected PC is the goal. Of course, access to various Cable stations is wanted and that appears to require a Cable or Satellite connection and cost.
We watch probably a dozen channels - that’s it. It’s sad to pay $100+ per month for that limited viewing.
Netflix streaming is $8/mo.
Amazon offers streaming if you sign up for their Premium account at $80/year.
Hulu Plus is about $8/month.
Youtube did/does have a section of old movies and TV shows, but you have to dig around to find them.
Your Internet provider, if cable, may offer movies/Tv On Demand and online.
TVGuide.com has links to online TV programs. Many of theirs are links to Hulu, however.
Windows7 and/or Windows Media Center has an InternetTV section that connects to several network offerings.

I was at a local thrift store not long ago and found a whole case of DVDs. Most not opened. I don’t know where they got them but there were some old movies I had been trying to find for years! Some foreign films. I hit a bonanza and bought 19 of them before I left the store.

Get a Roku. Subscribe to Netflix streaming and Hulu. The Roku will let you seamlessly access your subscriptions plus a lot of other very interesting free stuff - such as Russian TV and Al Jazeera, which believe it or not are probably a better source for news than the mainstream US networks.

I’ve been VERY happy with Netflix streaming for $8.00 a month. There’s more there than I could watch in a lifetime of 24/7 viewing.
In particular I like documentaries (Ken Burns, e.g.), National Geo, BBC series (Doctor Who, Foyle’s War, Sherlock, Island at War, Downton Abbey e.g.), some TV shows like Madmen, classic movies, foreign films, and biographical fiction.
Plenty of stuff there to keep me entertained while DH watches the Phillies lose.
They usually offer a free month trial period, then you could cancel if you don’t like it.
