Scientists probe link between magnetic polarity reversal and mantle processes

Scientists at the University of Liverpool have
discovered that variations in the long-term reversal
rate of the Earth's magnetic field may be caused by
changes in heat flow from the Earth's core into the base
of the overlying mantle.

The Earth is made up of a solid inner core, surrounded
by a liquid outer core, in turn covered by a thicker
or more viscous mantle, and ultimately by the solid
crust beneath our feet.

The magnetic pole is moving much faster these days, and the overall field has weakened 10% since the 19th century. It will be interesting to watch this develop during my lifetime.

My thoughts as well for years. Not too sure about their time lines in the article. I'm also not too sure about their theory of molten iron generating a magnetic field.

Additionally, in recent news, are findings of historical evidence correlating low sunspot activity with increased volcanic activity on earth. What the heck could cause that? LOL

Yes it is. Last I heard, up to 85 miles per year now. Very interesting times we live in!

Don’t “mantle processes” include subduction?

Seems to me that something else to consider is the possibility the core periodically becomes out of sync with the mantle, either through precession or some kind of field effect between the sun and the earth or possibly even the galactic plane.

Resulting pressure waves could contribute to increased thermal variations and increased earthquake and volcanic activity on much shorter time frames. It would also explain earthquake cycles and the fact that these cycles encompass earthquakes at all depths.

Yes, where two tectonic plates converge, a subduction zone will form and the oceanic plate will sink back into the mantle.

LOL! Of course, it’s also daunting to contemplate how easily that could come about in reality.

I suppose if great pylons were driven into the earth along all the world’s coastlines we can save our children and our children’s children from the continents crashing into each other. But we must act quickly and decisively.

Actually that sounds backward. Wouldn't low sunspot activity (less turbulent Sun) mean less volcanic activity?

I know. In the article below, they contribute it to a lag. I think there is something at work we haven't figure out yet, since SP minimums can last many years.
